I was wondering...how many scorpions would everyone recommend for a 20 gallon tank? And what to use as substrate? I have potting soil, but I heard that its not a good idea??

coco fiber would be better for substrate, something like eco earth. and what kind of scorpions are we talking about? 20 gallon tank could hold as many as 20 or more smaller comunal species or as little as one non-comunal species

For emperors, most recommend 5 gallons per scorp so 4 would be your limit.

However, I don't like dealing in gallons as the dimensions can vary. You could have a really short but large 20 gallon, or a really tall, thin and small 20 gallon tank etc. So really, it depends enitrely on the dimensions of your tank.

Its a 20 gallon, long. I think like, 12 high, 12 wide, and 30 inches long. I am planning on getting 2 mating scorpions. (I hear I should get another tank for the male once the female is pregnant)

That is correct. Once she is gravid, she will become progressively aggressive towards anything that she considers to be a potential threat.

Ok. I take it gravid is the correct term for getting knocked up?Razz Good to know.
In about 2 weeks I should be getting a male. I assume I should get one close to her size. Also, I heard I should put both in separate containers and re-do the terrain, so they are both in a new habitat (no territorial "bosses")

Anything else I should know before adding a second emperor?

I find making sure they're both "full" before introducing them helps as well.

Also, expect a clash or two when you first put them together.

Yes, gravid means pregnant.

Ensure the male is adult. (It will have a red telson if it is mature)

And yes, mix up the substrate and the set-up comletely to avoid any territorial issues when you re-introduce them at the same time afterwards.

Keep an eye on them as well, there is bound to be some "sparring" at the beginning but that is fine. You will know if they are fighting rather than sparring, and if so, It'd be better to separate them but I doubt this will happen.
