| As you may know, I have an emperor scorpion named Dusk. Well here recently I've been able to watch her crawl around (She has been coming out on most nights this week) and eat too. She has been doing well and likes her new water bowl I got her (the old one sprung a leak!). Anyways I just had a quick question, can you put the mealworm beetles (or whatever they're called) into the tank instead of pill bugs? I had heard that you can but I wasn't quite sure. I will post some new pics of Dusk sometime in the next few days, as her telson seems to be changing color slightly. Thanks for all of your help! | |

| I suggest that you dont because ive heard stories of the meal worms actually eating the scorpion...The scorpions eat as many as they can but when there full there full... I suggest that you do not put the meal worms in there unless you intend to feed her with them. | |

| if you can get your hands on any feeder roaches, i can suggest those as well. I however cannot get my hands on those from any of the pet stores around so idk anything about feeding them to emps. | |

| Dude stay away from meal worms. I am the guy that had his scorpion eaten by meal worms. I put them in with him, and a couple of days later I was like man my scorpion hasn't moved in about 10 hours so I touched the tail and it fell off and meal worms started crawling out of his body. Don't buy them | |

| Well dont say "dont buy" just be careful with how you feed them. Its best that you hold one with a big pear of tweezers and put it in the scorpions hands if your going to feed them those. They are not as healthy as crickets but they do the same job. They contain much more fat and such which makes them great for feeding broods. | |

| Dusk just wont come out for a picture! She'll be out, and by the time I get the camera she's back in her burrow. Oh well. I also just got back from a few day vacation, I missed my little emperor scorpion! Anyhoo... Thanks for the info on the mealworms, I'll pop their heads or something if I give her any. Oh, and could you tell me what type of roaches I should get? I saw some at the pet store and thought I might give her a treat. ( Ewww... Roaches... They're the rat of the bug world. ) | |

That sucks man. I had a meal worm burrow into the substrate and couldn't get him out so, thanks to your story, I changed the entire substrate.

| Don't need to change the entire substrate, just dig out the one that burrowed. They'll eventually pupate and you'll have a beetle running about.
Mealworms are generally only problematic because they're relatively high in fat compared to other feeders. Because they burrow they're not a "toss 'em in and leave 'em" feeder, more of a "hold this out so your scorp can grab it" feeder (which usually prevents any feeder-eats-the-scorp incidents).

| Well today I looked in my scorp. tank, and fungus is growing in it! It's white and kinda fluffy looking, so I'm guessing that it grew from too much humidity. Do I need to scoop it out? | |

| It won't do any harm, but some like to spot clean it just to make the enclosure more attractive. | |

| Just throwing this out there, but once my emps got to about their max size I was having a hard time feeding with crickets, because often the crickets would walk right under neath their open claws and never even touch them. So I started buying super worms and letting them mature into beetles, and fed the scorpions some beetles, which they always got. I still used crickets as their primary food, but sometimes they just would never catch the crickets, and thats when I fed them the beetles. | |

| My mom bought some mealworms today, can I pop their heads before giving one to Dusk? I don't have any crickets. | |

Yes, you will probably have to tong feed them though. Just make sure that you don't put the mealworms in without injuring them at least otherwise they might burrow.

| Kk, thanks! I know their fatty and all, but I need to feed her. Should I give her one or two for the week?
Edit: Oh, and I don't have any tongs yet, so... Could I use chopsticks or something along those lines?

The first yes meant its ok to give her either one or two. I would personally give her one, but two shouldn't do any harm.

| The only other thing I would say is that she might not take them. I know of lots of people who feed mealworms on occasion and the scorps will eat them, but a while ago when I tried mine with them, they just wouldn't accept them. So now I just stick with crickets & locust. | |

| Okay... I have one more question... (sorry!) We are having a bug problem, and we need to spray and/or call an exterminator. If they only spray in the attic and downstairs, will Dusk be okay? Or should I put a towel over her tank? I might could place her in a critter keeper and have her at my neighbors house, but I'm not positive. | |

Don't be. The whole reason why I go onto this forum is to help others using my knowledge and experiences, as well as expanding it. As for the exterminator thing, I personally wouldn't take any chances. I would see if I could keep it at a friends house temporarily or find a room in the house like a cellar or something where you could keep her. Even though the towel might prove quite useful, I still think it the chemicals will be able to pass through it as well as seeping through the ventilation on the tank.

| Thanks once again! I could probably keep her at a neighbors house for awhile. I'm pretty sure as long as they don't have to do anything with her, it'll be fine. I can take her rock burrow out of her cage so it doesn't smush her while moving the tank. She has another burrow she doesn't use as much, but I'm sure she'll go in it if there's nothing else to hide in. | |
