| Hello I am new here, I have never owned a scorpion before. I am wanting to purchase a Leiurus quinquestriatus. I know the dangers of owning such a venomous creature but that is what draws me to that species. I have owned a tarantula before and many snakes. I will do plenty of research before buying a scorpion. I have already done some. Anyways, does anyone know where I could find a Leiurus quinquestriatus they seem to be very difficult to find for sale.
Thank you. | |

The fact that a species is dangerous is a very bad reason to want to own it. - Quote :

Apples and oranges here. The behavior of scorpions is quite different from that of tarantulas and snakes. - Quote :

The best research to build up to having an L.q. is to experience other scorpions firsthand FIRST. Get as many stupid mistakes out of the way as you can (we all make them, it's just a fact of the hobby) and get over the initial nervousness almost all hobbyists have when they first start. That's not to say this species shouldn't make you nervous, just that you need to learn to calm your nerves when working around scorpions.

| Yep, you MUST try other "starter" species first. Like what Mike said, scorpions are unique in the way they behave, interact etc. So going for one of the most "hot" species first is extremely unadvisable. | |

| What would you all recommend besides a Emperor Scorpion. I forgot about the black widow I use to own a long time ago. But it was not a scorpion by any means. | |

| Heterometrus species are good "starters" if you're after a tropical species as opposed to a desert species. | |

| i would never sell a LQ to the OP. Even if I owned one. Behavior and coloration determine my scorps. Which is why I kinda want all sorts... U Mordax, B. Gigas, and Desert Hairies | |

| There's lots of starters. It all depends on what kind you want.
If you want a desert scorpion, I'd suggest Hadrurus arizonensis or any Vaejovis / Hoffimanus sp.

| Yep.... of all the scorpions you want to start with new to the hobby, it would be good to not start with just the most toxic species of all....
Playing the devils advocate here, I went from Hets and Liocheles straight to an lq... but only after many years... and I didn't have much choice because they didn't have anything in between. Still, I too experienced a Huge difference/gap...
Stay Alive bro.... lots more cool different species to try before you decide eat fugu
