| So I have a S. subspinipes de haani being shipped out on Monday and I'm pretty stoked since it'll be my first (centi)pede! Anyone have some basic tips for these guys? Main thing that I'm worried about is transferring them when I do maintenance in the enclosure. Pics will be posted upon arrival of the nasty little creature | |

| That's the one I had.
They are fast... jerky... always ate...

| Give it an enclosure with tall, sheer walls and no silicone sealant in the corners if you want to prevent escapes.
They can and will run up tweezers / forceps / whatever you try to herd them with.
If you really want to prevent escapes during tank maintenance, the best spot to do it in is probably a large bathtub.

| I'm planning on using this pretzel container. Its round, plastic, has a screw-on lid, ~12" high, and ~7" wide. I think that it'd be good for it. Pretty sure that the pede is 5-6". How much substrate should I put in? Is it ok to mix some coco/sand together? What about feeding? Totally new to these guys, so I have a lot of questions | |

| That's about what I had my last one in -- I drilled a few holes in the lid but they didn't help the ventilation much (always smelled like carbon dioxide when I opened the lid).
You don't need a whole lot of substrate -- some will burrow, some won't. I used coco fiber.
They'll almost always feed, so add prey at your own discretion.

| Okay so I have 3-4" of coco fiber and 9 holes in the lid. I used a piece of clay pot for a hide. Hopefully that's good enough for it.
They require about as much humidity as an emp, right?

| Can somebody tell me why a package would be shipped from Chicago, across PA (assuming that they went across PA to get to NJ), to NJ, and then back to PA? They could've made a pit stop. lol | |

| Seen similar things happen with a package going from Colorado to Virginia to Oregon. Yay, major hubs. | |

| Yep,,, just like my guy.
Didn't matter when or where, you threw something in there and these guys viciously attacked it.
Scorpions or Tarantulas can't compare.

| Honestly, this guy scares the living crap out of me! I'm afraid to stick anything in there for fear that it's going to run up it and escape or bite me. | |

Be prepared to have the CRAP scared out of you! I'm an owner of a few LQ's and they don't scare me and this guy cuts the cake! Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when unpacking it, transferring it, and performing tank maintanence! I've read from a bite report that the person's arm felt like it was broken in three different places. Now I'm not sure what his pain threshold is, but I wouldn't want to experience any of that! - Mr. Mordax wrote:

I've also read a few reports where the afflicted limb was in pain for three days. So, about on par with a bad C. sculpturatus sting.

| I'm still debating on making a handling vid ... but my debates are leaning towards the "don't do it" side. I have to study it's behavior a lot more before I even think about that. I'm not sure how frequent this species bites and what triggers it. I also have to study it's movement as well.
Yikes! | |

| They've been known to bite with absolutely no warning whatsoever. I read one report where someone reached in the tank and the 'pede shot out of its burrow and up the guy's arm. It just sat there for a minute, turned around, and stopped long enough to bite the guy's finger before going back down.
For the love of , DON'T do it. It's stupid, irresponsible, and unbecoming of a mod.
You know Cacoseraph from AB who intentionally gets bit by centipedes to see what the venom is like? In one of his videos, he reached for the S. subspinipes tank before pulling his arm back and saying "Just kidding!"
