| Doesnt it range from 1 year to 2 years? you will know maturity by the telson darkening and from then on its fair game as to when they decide when to mate. But being the same sorta size of an adult female/male would be best as dont want someone eating someone before anything else happened. xxxx | |

| I've heard it takes a few years, as well . . . There's also the telson darkening as Connie mentioned, but I'm not sure that applies to the species with black telsons, such as H. laoticus (I *think* some spinifers have the black telson, but I forget).
Your best bet might just be size -- if they look large enough to breed, give it a shot. You'll know it works if you see the Promenade a Deux.

| the promenage a deux is the mating dance, holding onto each other, light sometimes violent battling with telsons. The male will then put down his "seed" and push the female onto it, thats when mating happens. I dont know about mating seasons xxxxx | |

| I tell people that one of the cool things about scorpions is they mate by "holding hands" and dancing. Sometimes they "kiss" by interlocking their chelicerae. Thaedion has a video of it here. I would suspect that as a tropical species, mating would occur year-round with H. spinifer -- however, last year lots of captive P. imperator seemed to be giving birth around March and April, suggesting a mating season the previous summer (but, perhaps captive conditions in a temperate country made mating ideal in the summer -- you're still in a tropical country). Best thing to do is keep an eye on when they seem to prefer to mate and you may be able to discover something. | |

| Sounds pretty interesting.
Another question, I know that mating will be random if they're kept in communal enclosures but what if the H. spinifers are kept in separate enclosures? By introducing a male and female randomly, would they most likely mate on the same day?
Also, if kept in a community, then would it be likely that they'll mate alot i.e. each time the female is capable of mating(as soon as she has given birth)? lol.

| Not sure about the frequency of community matings, but I've seen and heard secondhand that separating them can increase the odds of mating. Take the male out for a few months and reintroduce -- they usually mate very soon if the female is receptive and not gravid. | |

| Ought to be less than a year . . . not quite positive. I got a "possibly gravid Heterometrus sp. in January of '07 and she birthed in November. I think I've heard it can range up to a year and a half, but if you keep them warm it should go faster (and it shouldn't be hard to keep them warm where you're at ). | |

| That's cool. Right now I have to wait for my 3rd instars to reach sexual maturity. I'd say, one more year, give or take. | |

| I would say as was thinking about it. Give them a year and a half from their birth date. As with humans we become sexually mature but we dont "do it" right away, maybe a year and a bit will give them the right length of time? xxxxx | |

I didn't quite get this part. Anyway, who said we humans don't do it once we hit puberty?
