| Yep, that is deffo an adult.
in most het and pandinus species, you can tell if a specimen has reached maturity by look at the colour of the telson. | |

| Yes, that was an adult -- I can't imagine them getting any larger (though it would be pretty cool). She even had a brood this time last year. | |

| Koi, if you ever want a HUGE scorpion, get a Heterometrus swammerdami. they should be pretty easy to obtain around your area. # these are the TITANS of the scorpion world. | |

| Heterometrus swammerdami. hmmm...somebody mentioned this specie at my local forum. Will see if I can get one. Which one is usually bigger in an adult longimanus, is it the female or the male? i think its the female since they are used to being gravid. right? | |

| yup, females are usually larger than the males in the scorpion world. here is a good example = http://www.ub.ntnu.no/scorpion-files/r_junceus(mating).jpg Rhopalurus junceus. the male is the smaller one. | |

| Those are illegal where he's from unless you have the right permits, Mark. But still a beautiful species. Stateside, H. swammerdami is incredibly difficult to obtain. They're native to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka -- I don't know if any dealers in the Philippines would have any, either. Either way, those H. longimanus you have are destined to be monsters, so don't think you've got sub-par scorps on your hands. | |

| Lol, I wish they were mine. as mike said, they are illegal in the U.K with out a DWA permit. I could get one but £70 a year pluss vet inspections isn't worth the hastle for keeping a few specimens. lol, I'd share my views on the DWA issue with you, but this is a family-friendly forum. | |

| £70 a year lol its so much cheaper in scotland, the problem with the DWA is it costs different amounts for different areas it should all be the same, or just non existent would be better | |

| waaaah!! pounds.. 1 pound is about 85 Philippine peso..jeeez thats too much.hahaha im, not sure, but we don't have concrete laws about exotic pets here, but we do have laws on endangered species. Even shipping, buying, or possession of piranhas here are illegal, but i know some who has them..even breeders. well, will just look at the the nook and crannies of the exotic hobbyist.. i know, they have atleast info. | |

| The DWA is there for a reason! you wouldnt want any odd person having a very hot scorpion to not know the proper care and whoops it gets out and BANG some one gets stung and could die due to a reaction.
I know some people find it a pain. But I KNOW I wouldnt want the kid next door having a hot scorpion just because it was easy to get a DWA OR if there wasnt one in place.
Anyhoo! | |

| I beg to differ. The DWA was originally put in place to keep any random person from having a large wild cat (such as a leopard or cheetah) as was popular in the 1960s and 70s. That makes sense -- it's pretty easy for one to get loose and nom a neighbor if they are so inclined. If scorpions were so dangerous as to be validated being on that list, you would hear lots of stories of inexperienced American hobbyists' specimens escaping and wreaking havoc (or European countries where dealers seem to get a broader range of imported species). Even in their native range, most of the "hot" species have a mortality rate of less than one percent, and scorpions are much less escape-prone than some other arthropods I could name. I still can't believe that the entire Latrodectus genus is listed. In all my invert experience, I haven't seen a single one exhibit a behavior other than trying to run and hide. /rant Mark, I'm sorry if your thread got hijacked here. Your H. longimanus are gonna be awesome, regardless of what family they're in. | |
