| Apologise for not putting pictures on straight away. When my baby girl goes to sleep this afternoon i will try and get some pictures to post.
After receiving my new specimens this morning these are my findings.
The adult female is somewhat larger (by about 3mm) than the male and also has a more stocky appearance. Her markings are somewhat more distinctive, especially on the tail. the sporadic tail markings are dull on the male and a good solid black on the female. Her tail is also more substantial than the male, a lot thicker which gives her almost a bothid like appearance, the telson remains quite small though.
with the use of a macro lens / jewelers loupe or other magnification the males pedipalps are more angular than the female. looking down on the female pedipalps they make a perfect smooth teardrop shape. On the inside of the male pedipalp there is almost a right angle before the actual pincers. This is due to the males having a small tube like node on their pedipalps. unless you are looking at your specimen on a plain sheet of white paper these nodes are hard to see from the naked eye. But using a sheet of paper gives a better view of the pedipalp shape
Sometimes the pecteins can be a good indicator of sex but because they are such a small scorpion, they look almost identical between male and female from the naked eye, both stick out well from under the body on both sexes although the male's do seem to stick out further by comparison. but unless you have a female to compare with this method of sexing may not yield accurate results. | |
