| Hi all. Any chance you scorpion gurus could help id this adult Heterometrus sp please? It would also be very helpful to me for the future if you could let me know how you came to your conclusion. Thanks in advance. | |

| Perhaps we can narrow it down...
Here a few Heterometrus sp. whom are fairly regular in the pet trade: - Laoticus (I clearly see granulation on the carapace so no Laoticus) - Cyaneus (Already doesn't make the cut because the bluish glow of the carapace is lacking.
- Spinifer - Longimanus - Petersii
The telson is clearly red...and not black. I hope I am correct in saying that that means it is either H. Spinifer or H. Longimanus...
Going on visual I would take my best bet and go for Heterometrus Spinifer
Take care,
Joey | |

| Hey, thanks for the reply. If it helps, she looks very blue/green under torch light but under natural light just black, with a reddish hue to her chelae. | |

If you mean she looks like that under black light, all scorpions look that way.

No, i shone a torch (torch app on phone) in last night and she had a green/blue hue (very obvious) all over. Don't know if that is relevant when identifying...

I figured, just was wasn't sure if it would help with identifying this sp. Well I'm happy to go with spinifer if there are no further advances! Check out my juvie here and help identify that too! Thanks.

Going on visual I would take my best bet and go for Heterometrus Spinifer I disagree Joey, I think its most likely a petersii due to the slight granulation one the chela, and a black telson (from what I can see in the pictures). Also, if you google H. petersii, you can see that little groove on the claws of petersii, and granulation on the edges. Spinifer's are smooth as a baby's bottom. But this is just my guess based on the pictures we can see. It's nothing compared to identifying a species in real life. Patrick

Patrick It's very hard with these species unless you can identify individual carapace granulation. Really thought it was red tho Hmmz hope others will also take a gander. Identifying Hets is like the game "what am i" with every guess a little card flaps down lol.

| The telson does look black, but "in the flesh" it is a very dark, deep reddish black colour. Hope this helps. | |

| i'm not really good with the detailed specifications of Heterometruses and it does look like my H. longimanus but i feel something kinda off with it so i guess it's not | |

| it does look the same as my spinifer's, the petersii i have has a more pronounced groove/ridge in the claw. someone posted the id key's for spinifer/petersii on this thread for me http://www.scorpion-forum.com/t9584-heterometrus | |

| Hmm, I can't tell the difference as the differences seem so subtle seem so subtle. Tarantulas are so much easier to identify! | |

| Looks to be a Heterometrus petersii.
Dark telson (it should be noted that the telson doesn't have to be black, just dark), visible granulation on the carapace, and absence or a pronounced internal tubercle on the patella of the pedipalp. (Which rules out H. spinifer.)
Doesn't look at all like a H. longimanus to me.
