Would this enclosure work as a scorpion vivarium? Montanajar

8.5 inch diameter

13 inches tall

I have many of these and I would love to be able to use them for an invert collection, scorpions included.

I touched on this in a other thread but I would really like to get some more feedback as to what can and can not be kept in them.

To add to what I said, looking around at care sheets, it looks like Centruroides spp, Lychas spp, Rhopalurus spp & Tityus spp would work well.

But what else would work? Are these my only choices?

I think it would work perfectly for any bark scorpion. The genuses you mentioned, along with Babycurus, Grosphus, Isometrus, Odonturus, and I think Uroplectes would work.

Would it be too small for small to medium sized desert scorpions?

Medium sized ie. Androctonus and small sized ie. Hoffmannius spingerus.

Desert scorpions would need to burrow, and while it would work for a scorpling, It wouldn't work very well with adults. The Androctonus sp. would end up being very close to the lid.

Close to the lid? These are 13.5 inches tall. Are you saying that 10+ inches of substrate is needed for Androctonus?

I was thinking that the amount of floor space available would be the only possible problem. These enclosures offer 57 square inches of floor space.

No, but if you chose to put some rocks, wood, or something else in, you see my point. If one chose to put a Hadrurus arizonensis in, there would need to be a lot of substrate, but also not enough room.

As for the care of bark scorpions, the sheet that GS wrote up is applicable to Centruroides spp, Lychas spp, Rhopalurus spp & Tityus spp.

Is it also applicable to other bark scorpions such as the ones you mentioned...Babycurus, Grosphus, Isometrus, Odonturus, and Uroplectes?

The conditions such as humidity and temperature might not be the same, but everything else should apply. I doesn't hurt to look up care sheets though.

I think they could be used for most any small to medium size species. I would recommend modifying the top by cutting out the center of the lid and adding screen. They would make great bark scorpion enclosures.

Medium is what....3-4 inches full grown? And small is 2-3 full grown, right?

Trying to make sure we are on the same page.

Yep...that is a good size range. Obviously the height over floor space makes it good for bark or burrowing species. A diameter twice the length of the scorpion is a good rule. Get some long tongs!

If you had these enclosures and you were going to use one to house an androctonus, how would you do it?

I am guessing 4-5 inches of substrate and a hide. Hide should be a a chunk of flat slate or bark big enough to cover the entire body and substrate should be dry aquarium sand.

FYI - This is not a breeding set up. Just ONE scorpion.

I think that would work. I don't know that you would need that much sand, but it wouldn't hurt. Definitely keep the air holes up high. How does the lid attach on those jars? You want it very secure in case it would tip over accidentally.

I'm so tempted to get an A. Australis, but I have a few new rare species coming soon. Just be really careful with Androctonus species. Never put your hand anywhere near them. They are no joke. YouTube is a great place to see how people keep them.

I have the lids very secure and air holes drilled in the lid.

I have looked on you tube and it seems that everone on there has much more floor space and thats part of why I began to wonder if these enclosures would provide enough floor space.
