New Specimens

Today arrived my 2 x Hoffmannius spingerus (though I was shocked at them being only around 1cm) gonna have to buy some micro worms / fruit flies.




Sorry for the quality my Iphone struggles with these tiny little guys, Think I'm gonna downsize them as this is far too large an enclosure for such small specimens. If I can find them again that is lol.

and here's the VERY sluggish Hadogenes paucidens:

she looks to be in very bad shape and was freezing upon arrival,


I've put her directly under the heat bulb for a few mins and I'm watching her carefully to see if she perks up.


I've also noticed her front right leg half missing, do they regenerate in scorpions? Otherwise it's no real issue so long as it can't kill her, seems to be an old wound as no trace of the leg could be found within the shipping container.

Tomorrow the 2 x H.laoticus & 1 x H.Longimanus arrive so we'll see how they are!

Also, of course I love that H. Paucidens !!
I believe it will not regenerate it as well as a Tarantula, but perhaps it might get a segment back.

Otherwise, I don't believe it will have issues managing with half a front leg.

I really hope she perks up!!!

Thanks Joey! She's perked right up, she seems very temperamental though, cut a mealworm in half just for crossing her and she's a very quick mover now so seems good, I'd like to eventually mate her but we'll see. I'm slightly disappointed in the size of the Hoffs but hopefully I can get them up to a more hardy size.

My h.mysorensis has transformed into a way faster and bulkier scorpion too, I'm just praying he remains social with the other 3rd instar specimen.

H. Paucidens have quite the personality! Mine is very relaxed but can be very fast, temperamental and active in the evening. She has a few favorite spots and climbs around in the enclosure.

And has a big appetite. She takes adult grasshoppers with a powerful grabb and sting move.
I was cleaning a bit in the terrarium, and I put the paint brush I use gently between her chela to test here grabbing power and she actually has quite a pull!!! I was very curious about her strenght and they are beasts I love the big chela and the pronounced granulation on their overall carapace! It makes them look tough and cute at the same time.

But I digress, I really love this species:)

Of course your Hoffs will grow and it might be interesting to see their growth rate and study it.
I love the bulkiness of the Heterometrus sp. they look like tanks, that is so brutally awesome.

Regarding your communal H. Mysorensis...
I think if you remain cautious and provide enough hides and food that will help with keeping them content, and not munching on each other.....

Thanks Shane, and ah okay Joey I was worried that it may cause her harm in future but if she can live fine with it then I shan't worry, I've provided essentially a bark strip pile for the Het's and they both live under several of them, though they seem to share a lot of the time.

Managed to also get a snap of the Arizona Devils feeding, they're insane and have actually taken down the large mealworms which i didn't think they would haha!


These are really active little guys and they seem to be enjoying their quite frankly over sized enclosure, but I guess it's closer to the wild for them at least, both have done a little burrowing but seem to prefer the rock formation I built for them.

Great pictures! It is always nice to see a happy collector.

Got the hets today, only issue is both the laoticus appear to be on deaths door:


This one has only flinched the claws and shaked for a while but no real movement and he's freezing underneath.


this one is in a better state but still lacks movement, putting both of them under a heat lamp and seeing how they do for a while.

Whats that yellow substrate?

The yellow that's amongst it was a tiny bit of sand that got into the mix, I'm gonna be replacing it at this rate, but assumed that it'd be ok for now. There's about 2 inches of cocofibre in there also

ahh ok, looked very bright compared to the coco fibre. Looks ok as long as they scorp has a hide to use

He's got a massive piece of strip bark that he's gone straight under, as well as a bark pile he's been rummaging through, I think that I'll be upsizing the enclosures however as I wasn't informed of the size these would be.

They are a lot tougher than we think.

Both of the laocticus are really skittish and run at the first sign of activity near their enclosure, however the Longimanus is probably the angriest animal I've ever known, it has been constantly trying to sting me and does a threat display through the wall of its enclosure whenever I've observed it. All of them seem healthy and I have some macro worms On their way to feed em up, they show no interest in the small mealworms as I thought, one laocticus of the two seems to just sit in the water bowl all the time and I assume its just having a good soak, humidity in there is pretty high so I don't think it's due to lack of humidity.

Think my favourites right now remain to be the 1cm Arizona devils as they constantly run around killing mealworms and dance around on their rock, they've even started placing all their kills up on the rock like some sorta storage or presentation for me haha, they won't stop eating so hopefully il see them growing fairly fast! As for the flat rock and 2 smaller mysorensis' specimens they're doing great!

Think me and the longimanus will eventually work out our differences but in the mean time il respect it's space as I'd prefer to not get stung
