Emps burrow to escape the heat. The problem is insticnt tells them the hotter it is the deeper they should burrow. If the heat pad is under the tank...it probably will cook the scorpion. But you know I heard they taste alot like lobster. Wink

I've heard of this precaution quoted time and time again, but I've never actually heard of someone losing a scorpion this way.

. . . I still wouldn't risk it, though.

I have. A 3I baby P.imp. My brother put the heat pad under and fried it. IT was all warm and dead when I pulled it out. I didnt even realized it was dead untill my room started to smell.

If you heard that people had cooked their scorps by putting the heat mat under the tank... Why would you do it? Bang Head

Heatpads I use barely raise the air temp, only the surface of what they are touching.

That has a lot to do with stuff I learned during my energy transports class -- but it would also heat up the substrate if it was an UTH, and the glass would get really hot if the scorp made it down that far.

i suppose one inportant factor to look at would be the wattage of the theat mat itself and what the surface temp of the heat mat reaches, but id never put it under a substrate for 2 reasons, 1 why risk the scorp and 2 a heat mat under lets say 2 inchs of moist substrate will break quite easy, they look strange whn broken they sort of bubble up, plus you shouldnt really let it come in to contact with water.

I think he meant by "it's under his water dish" as it's under WHERE the water dish is on the underside of the glass.

ahh right well if its under the glass then the tank shud be off the ground a bit so there is air circulation between the mat n the tank but still as already said shudnt use that method just incase.

Mine don't either. I'm pretty sure they'll hide in a premade burrow, though (see my thread about my lazy emp). If they do however decide to burrow, they might meet up with the heat mat on the bottom Neutral

I do keep mine under the tank as it helps with the humidity. Mine however is placed under the water dish and the water dish covers a good portion of where the heat mat is and the P. Imp doesn't burrow near the water dish. She is usually on the other side of the tank burrowed in her cave.

Careful, they can curve their burrows sometimes.

My heat mat is OUTSIDE the tank and stuck to the wall.
I once in a noob mistake *well told by the shop before finding forums* that it was ok to have the heat mat IN the tank and under the orchid bark!
Stingy nor Pinchy ever attempted to dig, now they DID but never in a "omg im hot I must get lower" and infact spent their time above the heat mat on the orchid bark!

They always curve their burrows.
*But abyss my scorp doesn't*

True because your most likey than not confining them to a space and only giving them about seven inches of substrate. What I mean to say is THEY WILL TRY to spiral their burrows but most likely than is almost impossible in captivity. Just some info that I wanted to share with y'all. If you ever find a scopion burrow in the wild expect it to curve.

my p. cavimanus made an "epic" burrow system in the small tank she had in two days!
I cant wait to see what she does in her new tank! that's if she/he hasnt died! *is worried*
moving and rehoming is such a stress sometimes for them! and a full home move coming up in about 2 weeks!

True, because of the constriction of glass walls stopping the scorp sometimes they will chamber near a glass and make some pretty complex burrows. Usually the smaller ones do this though.
