PostSubject: Taxonomy: Which Name is Right?   3/29/2013, 3:19 pm

I'm getting more confused and need some input. It seems several genus and species names have been changed over the years. I found a reference that the Vaejovis genus had been updated to Hoffmanius in 2008. So do I have a Vaejovis Coahuilae or a Hoffmanius Coahuilae? Is Vaejovis an outdated name and no longer used?

Second example...Centruroides Sculpturatus or Centruroides Exilicauda...I have found references that they are the same species, that they are separate based on their location (Sculpts are Arizona and Exilis are California), and then another reference that they were found to be genetically different species in 2004.

I want to use the correct names for scorpions...that is why most of us steer clear of the common names. Is there a good taxonomy list that is updated and accurate? What other genus/species changes are out there?

3rd time trying to write this my daughter keeps knocking my phone down lol. Kari Mcwest will be able to answer this better than I and lucky for you he agreed to a ScorpionForum expert Q&A. From what I know Hoffmanius is official but experts disagree on the methods used. C.sculpts and C.ex were first considered different species then they were all one species since no differences were found other than location. But now they are considered separate species after genetic testing.

Bayss, it's Hoffmanius coahuilae, take a look at this list: http://www.ntnu.no/ub/scorpion-files/vaejovidae.php
Vaejovis is still a valid genus, it's just that many members were moved out.

I have no idea on the difference between the two Centruroides though.
