A very beautiful specimen that is to be respected by every collector in the hobby. They move very fast and have a tendency to be quite aggressive.

I love this species. The mesasoma varies in color and the metasoma has a distinct black color on the last metasomal segment. This particular specimen is quite large for an LQ as you can see from the pictures.

I've been breeding this species for several years now and they can be quite varied pertaining to their temperament. For the most part these guys have a relatively quick temper, especially males. However, I do have a female who is so placid that it is unnerving. They really make great captives and it's good to see fellow hobbyist taking a liking to this species in spite of it being rather common in the pet trade.

Soap box moment:
A good rule of thumb is to treat all with the maximum respect while fighting the temptation of getting caught up in the novelty of having a animal that could potentially be life threatening. Remember that adding to the already ridiculous fear mongering and demonizing that has already been done to this class of animals is ultimately going to lead to bad things, whether legislative or otherwise. I'd recommend emphasizing on a different aspect of their anatomy other than a very superficial overview of their venom composition.

LQ's are cool.

The only reason I collect Buthids is because they demand so much respect (They are hot as hell and I LOVE that aspect).

I hope they restrict the market for hot arachnids some time soon. Andro's and LQ's are way too available to the open market. Everyone here knows how I feel about that.

Andros and Lq's have been commonly sold genera for decades without much incident. Legislature passed regarding animal laws never does what the laws were intended to do. Often times "restricting the market" only restricts responsible citizens, not the irresponsible and ignorant. Now, I will say, creating a novelty surrounding these species by exaggerating their natural behaviors and venom composition tempts those who are not responsible and who buy animals out of novelty only to "ditch" them when the novelty wears off, or make youtube handling videos only to get stung and other activities that are equally as irresponsible. I find it puzzling how someone who is so adamant about perpetuating these poorly generated scorpion stigmas has "feelings" about legislature that should be passed. Basically, you exacerbate the problem then, quite uninformatively, give an opinion that is generated by these stigma you yourself perpetuate. Snake legislature has some purpose as there are a good number of species with over a 3' striking range as well as venom that could kill you even with the proper antivenin. Scorpions, however, only have a maximum of a 3" striking range and venom that could kill with a bad reaction to the venom. Not saying these animals aren't potentially dangerous, but I think it's a little gung ho say that you feel as if there needs to be restrictions.

PostSubject: Re: Death stalkers   Death stalkers Empty3/27/2013, 1:14 pm

Putting the Admin hat on now.
There’s definitely a topic worth debate here but LETS KEEP IT RESPECTFUL!

In my opinion, maybe there are to many hot species to readily available. A quick check on my local craigslist shows an LQ for sale. Who’s to say that a kid with no experience can’t get there hands on one. But making a legal restriction hurts the hobby, and hurts the responsible owners and breeders. I would personally be ok with a very loose restriction where sellers won’t sell to minors, a lot of dealers have policies in place already where they won’t sell to minors and that’s great. In my opinion if 18+ years old and you decide you want to stick you hand in with a venomous scorpion, snake, lizard, frog, whatever. Then it’s completely your adult decision to do so.

@Keith, how would you feel if the US adapted a system that made it near impossible to own any buthids. I know when we talked about your opinion was the responsible owner would go the extra mile. But hypothetically, a restriction that made it so that you need to pay for $5,000 licencse or something. Then the price of the adult speciemen would also increase let’s say to an even $100.00. None of the responsible people in the hobby would go that extra mile, instead they would just get other readily available scorpions. So I get where you’re coming from bro, I really do, but I urge you to really think about the consequences of what a legislation restricting scorpions will really do and if it will really help. As an owner yourself would you be willing to spend the cash necessary to comply with a regulation like in the UK for example? I know tons of UK members who should have access to buthids and should be allowed to breed them, and do want to but can’t afford to do so.

I respect what you are saying Eddy. I understand that all of us expierenced hobbyists want to be able to collect what we see fit. I also understand that I am starting to sound like Obama with the whole gun law issue.

If we as serious collectors can keep top tier Buthids out of the hands of minors then I am all for it.

my whole collection consists of Andros and LQ's. I don't want to loose them but if It means protecting human lives then so be it.

This is my opinion.

Eddy,
This is my point exactly and the uk's restriction on buthids is absolutely ridiculous considering the potential danger that is posed by the buthidae family.

Also, I think Mako's post was merely a product of, yet again, stigmas produce from certain labels. Not all breeders in these kind of hobbies breed for money. I typically give away more scorpions than I ever sell in a year. Now, this I don't blame you for because it is very atypical for someone who is successful in these things not to capitalize on it.

The summary of my stance is:
Freedom is inversely proportional to safety in most cases and I'd rather have the potential for harm present in daily life than have my every movement restricted. The safest place you could ever live is in a cage. With that said, I don't think actual legislature should be in place to regulate anything in this hobby, but I also don't feel as if people who are irresponsible should own potentially dangerous animals. Good thing is this hobby seems small enough to be, for the most part, self regulated. I really don't think my comments were disrespectful in anyway, but if so, my apologies.

True and untrue, My standpoint comes from me buying an A. amoreuxi when I was 14 from some guy at a swapmeet...crap like that happens all the time and I'm pretty sure that is pretty harmful to the hobby as well. I can see where you are coming from, and I apologize if I came off coarse. I have a tendency to be sensitive and like yourselves I too care about this hobby.

I am open to debate and I will edit the thread for obvious reasons.

Thank you guys for clearing things up. Just want to make sure the forum stays friendly. Like I said this is a debateable topic. Maybe there is something we can do to limit the sell to minors. But honestly a swap meet is out of everyones control.

True but this is what we as hobbyists need to try and stop. Blackmarket sales of medically significant species is really bad news for everyone. It will not stop but we need to try am I right?

That you are, the difficult part is finding a the best process for that. One of the things that Sean points out is that this hobby is small and for the most part self regulated. None of the big time sellers sell to minors and warn of toxic venom levels. The lower level money makers that are trying to make a quick buck is problem that’s for sure and the solution for that is absent

Maybe we all need to focus on a way to stop the nonsense instead of worrying about the government stepping in and charging us a billion dollars for a permit to own deadly arachnids....food for though. If its our hobby then why are we not doing anything about it. just sayin

Keith I disagree, I think we’re taking the highest priority in ensuring that our hobby is safe and secure. That’s why this forum is here to help and support. What type of action do you propose because? Because I think it’s an extreme by allowing the government to take president over the hobby. Of course I worry about the government coming in and banning animals solely out of fear. Scorpions are not deadly creatures, they’re dangerous for sure. But so is a full grown ball python to a 4 year old. Hell even a dog is deadly to a 4 year old. When you take the position that a human life is more important than a scorpion, believe that 100% of people on this forum would agree with that. You are against gun control right? Guns can take a human life in a second but you would agree that by banning guns you’re taking the freedom away from responsible gun owners. You’re in the minority here as far as the regulation issue is concerned but open your mind to the arguments that are being made and weight them with your beliefs. Look into the data, when is the last time there has been a reported death from a scorpion in the united states?
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/168230-overview#a0199
4 deaths have been reported in the United States in 11 years due to scorpion envenomation.
At least 8 deaths have occurred since 1999 in the US from WATER overdose
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication
So how much safer can get than 0.36 deaths a year?
