| Hello everyone, I am pretty new to the forums, but I have a question about what kind of feeders I should be buying for my new Emperor scorpion, I bought him a bag of baby crickets, but am unsure whether or not that is appropriate. Should I be buying him full grown crickets? and what should I be feeding the crickets. My scorpion is still quite young, creamy stinger color, and about 2-3 inches in length. Someone approximated that he is in the 4 instar stage of juvenile growth. Thanks for the help. | |

| Any type of feeder that is about one-half his body size would be good. For example, half-grown crickets would probably be about right. I would offer him about 2 or 3 feeders two times per week.
It is best to "gut load" your feeders before offering them to your scorp. That means allowing the feeders to feed on fresh fruit and/or veggies for at least 4 to 6 hours before feeding to your scorp. This will ensure that the feeder's digestive tract is full of nutrients and moisture. See the thread on "gut loading" in the feeder section.

| Thanks for the quick response, and helpful info, I will cut up an apple now. also, should I be removing the crickets he does't eat? I read somewhere that they may attack him, but they are really small, and I don't think they could do much damage to him. | |

| Any crickets that are not eaten in a day or two should be removed, as should any dead or partially eaten crickets. Decaying crickets can lead to mite outbreaks in humid enclosures. If you suspect your Emperor is molting or very close to molting, you should not offer it crickets. Scorpions stop eating just before and during a molt and crickets have been known to kill freshly molted scorpions. | |

| I am considering purchasing a cup of lobster roaches to feed my scorpion, is this recommended? Are there any tips for transferring roaches/ crickets from keeper to habit? Do you use a net or what? | |

| I've never tried roaches as I can't get them in my area. But for crickets I keep them in a small critter keeper and pick them out individually with long tweezers and drop them into my tanks. | |

| I also have some hotter species so the tweezers are a must for collecting uneaten cricket parts and general tank maintenance so I've gotten in the habit of using them everywhere. | |

| I also just picked up an infra red light, and took the heating cable that I was using on the bottom of the tank off, Should I leave the infrared light on all the time? it seems kind of dangerous. Could it start a fire? | |

| my infared lights have been on for months , they wont start a fire.
i leave my crickets in the tank untill they all disapear, becuase my emps are in there burrow.
but in the summer the temps are higher and the crickets breed in the tank thats the only problem.
but i do tank maintence and pick out dead cricket parts.

| just be careful you don't put anything on the lamp or too close to it as it could melt or start a fire. But so could a regular light or the stove. Just don't be careless. | |
