PostSubject: Humidity Problem   1/19/2013, 11:21 pm

Hi , i m getting my Emp very soon . But i ve noticed my tank does seem to hold the humidity very well , Seems to sit around 65% and thats with 2 good mistings a day .

My tank is a glass 10 gallon tank with a perspex lid . I ve drilled 4 holes on one side of the perspex lid to let heat in from my IR lamp which sits over them , and then i ve drilled 3 smaller holes on the other end of the lid for ventilation . I ve actually taped up the 3 smaller holes to see if that helps but it does nt . Before i drilled the holes the tank kept great humidity (90%) although the tank glass was constantly misting up inside but the temp was down (65-70*C) as not enough heat was getting through . Now my temp is pretty good (82*C) but humidity has dropped .

Dont want to put my Emp in till both levels are correct and stable . Any suggestions ?

False bottom set up, you'll cut your misting to a minimal. I'm posting from my cell so I can't link you the thread but use the search bar

I ve read a little about False bottom set ups , would that eliminate the glass misting up and raise the humidity at same time ?

No, the glass misting means you're doing it right. Chances are if the glass is clear the humidity is low sorry

False bottoms are probably the best, but if you don't feel like going that route, pour water into the substrate rather than misting. It's hard to mist enough to really wet down the substrate. I think the rule of thumb is the substrate is about right if when you pick up a hand full and squeese it a bit of water comes out. It should be moist but not soggy. Misting just tends to wet the top.

What are you using to measure the humidity? Generally many of the cheap hygrometers available are pretty inaccurate. In particular the cheap analog hygrometers.

I don't really bother measuring the humidity in my scorpion enclosures. For species that require high humidity, all I do is make sure their substrate is always damp (not sodden), and I use one or both of the two methods that Abyss and Robert mentioned to keep it that way.

So long as the substrate is always damp, your emperor will be fine.
