new scorp at a local pet store

Well the local pet store that is always good at getting different scorps in, other than emp's, hand what they call a European sand scorpion. I can not find any info on this guy anywhere only but it looks like a large version of my Scorpio Maurus but the end of the claws are darker and the last segment on the tail before the telson isn't dark like the S. Maurus. The body is darker and this guy also has the black line down the middle of the body like the S. Maurus too.

Anyone have an idea of the scientific name of this guy?

I've never heard of any European species being called a sand scorpion.

Hmmm, there are lots of subspecies, many of which have now been elevated to species level, of Scorpio maurus so their colour can be very variable. None of them are found in Europe though.

There are a number of yellowish Euscorpius spp. but none are associated with sand as far as I know. They'd also be slightly smaller than an adult S. maurus.

You could also look up Buthus occitanus/ibericus and Mesobuthus gibbosus which are European species and are of a yellow colour.

Without pictures though I'm completely guessing and common names are often wrong/confusing/shared with other species etc.

I'm going to try and get a picture of it tonight.

I was wrong with the name they call it. Its an Egyption Sand Scorpion.

Could be S. maurus palmatus.

Buthacus arenicola are often called Egyptian sand scorpions, but these have very slender pedipalps, typical for buthids.

That looks like it. It is about double the size of my S. Maurus

I guess my next question would be is there a difference between S. Maurus and S. Maurus Palmatus?
They look fairly similar except the body of my S. Maurus is more yellow than the pic I posted and also my S. Maurus is half the size of the one above

After doing a bit more searching/comparing it appears they are both a S. Maurus. One is male and the other female maybe.

The store also has a Hadogenes Troglodytes I may get too. This hobby is getting pricey so hopefully I can sweet talk the reptile manager into a good price

Sometimes, the lighting on the specimen affects the coloration on the picture taken, and how we see it on our computer screen.

I bet helping the reptile manager to clean some of his enclosures would put you in a better place to get a discount or something

The only difference between the several subspecies of S. maurus would be in their coloration.

People still use stores to buy scorpions?

Here in sweden you have to pay like 10 times as much in a store as you would if you order them online from a breeder.

Did buy my first scorp a LQ male adult for like 70 bucks, then i did order 10 P.T online and got them for the same price as the LQ, ofc babies but still.

Issue is that there is pretty much no breeders here in Canada it seems, let alone the Vancouver, BC area and that is why I want to start growing my collection and start breeding so people have some options. Emps are about $30-40 in pet stores here and my S. Maurus cost me almost $60. The cheapest I ever got emps for was about $25 in pet stores.

I know what you mean Sin. I'm in ontario and any breeders we have are pretty much store owners so there is no real break in pricing it seems. It's a bit of a bummer really.

Well I bought the scorp tonight. here is another pic of it. Now what I am wondering can the two I have actually mate since one is listed as a S. Maurus and the other a S. Maurus Palmatus?

Your in Ontario too? Iv looked for breeders as well. Went to the last raptile expo and found some people that dealed souly in scorps and tarantulas. Seemed fairly decently priced but I do beleive they were from a store in the Londona if I remember correctly
