Need some help Empty
PostSubject: Need some help   Need some help Empty10/28/2012, 12:32 am

Hey I have 2 emperor scorpions living in a 10 gallon tank one adult and one juvenile. They live in the same burrow system under the same hide and have been doing so for about 2 weeks now. My concern is that the smaller one is not getting out to get food because the adult is always at the entrance and blocking the smaller one from getting to the surface for food. Should i be concerned or no? Should i do anything with them or leave them be?

Thank you Smile

With a multi scorp set up I found I wasn't sure who was eating what so I started hand feeding my emps. I'd pinch the cricket with my tweezers and entice them one at time into feeding.

I've got my brood on coco husk only so I can lift my hides and see them. I'd be hesitant to bust up a burrow just to hand feed though. Maybe try to bum rush the crickets into the burrow past the guard with the hopes that they all eat?

Maybe load up a Mcdonalds straw with 5 or 6 crickets and insert it past the guard then shake them out? I'm sure someone else has a better idea these are just the first things off the top of my head.

Sometimes the "Guard" may be on duty covering the young emp who is about to molt Smile

Anyway, if you are sure that the younger one is not about to molt, you may consider releasing one cricket at a time into the burrow. There's only so much that the guard can take. One at each pincer and one or two at the chelierae. The fourth or fifth cricket released into the hole will get to the smaller emp.

However, what i recommend is not doing anything on your part to make sure the small emp gets his food. If hunger is what he is facing right now, i'm sure he'll park himself nicely beside the female with his pincers just at the burrow's entrance Smile

Wow if this is in fact the case i think this is totally cool haha i did not know they did this at all. Well i can give you a little bit more detail onto what is happening so far all i know is that the small emp is still alive and moving but he will not come up from his burrow. Is he molting or just suppressed by the large emp? and second when i fed them last night the large emp was very violent and aggressive with the crickets attacking and instantly placing them onto his chelicerae and backing back into the burrow area. I cant imagine that the large emp is hungry because he is always fed appropriately. Maybe the small one is molting and the large emp is guarding? I just cannot tell at this point and i dont want to disturb them to try and find out. I really appreciate the help and i hope that helped to maybe understand whats going on in my situation. Thank you also Yames I am going to see what i am dealing with then maybe if he is not molting try to feed the smaller one some crickets?

Yeah the more I think about it GS is right. If he wasn't getting food in the burrow because the big one was taking it all he'd eventually get hungry enough to go looking for food. We make our scorps sound like they have intense needs but at the end of the day it's heat, water and food. And they will try to solve their own problems when they're ready. We just have to provide the requirements.
