Heterometrus Spinifer

29th February 2007. approximately 1pm.

Just got my 1 inch Hets. from a friend, housed in a small microwave container for transportation. As soon as I got into the car, I lifted the lid to check on them and one of them scurried up my shirt, into my shirt before I could do anything(these guys are fast). Looking into my shirt trying to locate the bugger and as though it knew I was facing difficulties finding him, it proceeded to notify me of his location by landing a sweet sting on my back.

It was pain initially, nothing more than that. It soon subsided after an hour and I was alright.

p/s : they're only 1 inch though, the adults might pack a bigger punch.

Instar : 3rd instar.

my adult H.spinifer stung me twice in the past and it felt like a sudden pin-prick. just 3 minutes of itchy pain like something you would get from a nasty red ant bite. (unless you have allergic reaction to it i guess)

I have a large one that lets me handle him when he is in a good mood. He gave me a dry sting on the loose skin between the thumb and trigger finger once. He poked me good and I could see the little hole from his stinger but no venom. I guess he still loves me even when he is in a bad mood!

I feel like they cant love anyone because mines are so rude XD I feed them but they dont love me.....why!!! I just want to hug them haha

If I handle mine on a regular basis he calms down a lot. At first I pick him up by gently scooting him into a deli cup and then let him crawl out on my hands. I hold him close to my body to restrict his movement. As you know, you have to be careful that these little guys don't run off your hand and fall. I usually like to do it sitting on a couch.

If I do this every day for a while he calms down and I can VERY SLOWLY go into his cage and pick him up without the deli cup. He does not stay "tame" long though if I don't work with him often. I'm convinced that some scorps can be conditioned to regular handling and will calm down. I would NEVER do this with any but the mildest venom level scorps.

from my experience, if you want to handle a scorpion never ever pick it up. it only awakens their aggressiveness and stresses them. if you are to handle them, let them get out of their enclosures on their own them bridge your hand over them as they try to go down. works for both my heterometrus and my rhopsalurus.
