i want to get anather scorp but i can only own one at a time so i really want to make em count. ive chosen between scorpio maurus, grosphus anakarana and centruoides bicolor but i cant decide on one i want a more active scorp than my lazy emp who sits in his hole all day like emps are known to do but due to my emp being a subadult and not knowing wat instar he is i dont know how old he is anyway of s maurus, g anakarana, and c bicolor, which would you choose and which would be best for a second species

I take it you live in the U.S. ?

Scorpio maurus is probably the best choice for you out of the three. They do like to burrow though.

Grosphus anakarana are generally not suitable for beginners. C. bicolor are rare in the hobby and would not be considered a beginner species either. I don't know that much regarding these two species to be perfectly honest, but I'm pretty certain their venom is fairly potent.

If you want a active scorpion that will sting it's prey, I suggest Centruroides gracilis.

Individuals from North America have less toxic venom than their relatives from Central and South America. C. gracilis from Cuba have a reported LD 50 value of 2.7 mg/kg, which is quite potent.

Nearly all C. gracilis in the U.S. hobby are "Florida morphs" though.

yes i do live in the U.S. and i know ken has a G. anakarana for sale and i could probably find an S. maurus but your right that C. bicolor would be hard to find but if i look hard enough i could probably find one i understnad that anakarana and bicor are both from buthidae but i read they just cause a nasty sting i like the two because of their coloring and i would see them alot because i read theyh are bark scorps however maurus has the historical fame thats pretty interesting and they are pretty feisty, but i would have to spend alot of dough to make a good habitat for it i would also have to change a little bit for bicolor but not as much as the maurus i have a piece of driftwood i used for my crayfish untill they died so im pretty much set if i get a bark scorpion

Well, it's ultimately up to you.

I don't really know much about the toxicity of G. ankarana venom and as far as I know, it's not considered a dangerous species. But then again, I can't find any research on it's venom nor can I find any envenomation reports.

As for C. bicolor, they are very rare in the U.S. and I wouldn't count on finding them.
In addition to that, scorpions that are sold as Centruroides bicolor are often Centruroides margaritatus "bicolor morph" (A species that's not exactly common in the U.S. hobby either)

As for their venom. . .
Considering that they are native to Central America, (Costa Rica and Panama) their venom is probably fairly potent. (I'm guessing around the same toxicity as C. gracilis from Cuba.) They are also quite large (reaching lengths approaching 5 inches) they are likely to have a lot of it.

i drew sticks to choose the species i would get next im so undecided and i got Centruoides bicolor

however because you mentioneed that bicolors are hard to find and are usually not even bicolors if found, i drew sticks again for my backup and got Grosphus anakarana as my fall back species

if i cant get one of those ill go complete overhaul and set up a new tank for a scorpio maurus which shouldnt be hard to find

as for venom, part of the decision factor envolved toxicity so i researched each species and their toxicity and the anakarana and bicolor do have a pretty nasty sting but hospitalization would not be required for any of them
