PostSubject: Classroom friendly biome with no so friendly inverts   8/26/2012, 10:52 pm

Hey guys,
I just made a dual biome enclosure for my lady friend's classroom and wanted to fish for advice or kudos, but mostly to get kudos Laughing . I started with 2 x (4"x4"x4") polystyrene boxes, 2 x 1.5" acrylic hinges, 2 x acrylic hasps, 2 x small fortress brand locks, 1 x 2" mini louver vent, a hobby blade and a lot of patience.

Basically, I took the one side of the lid's lip off by scoring the appropriate regions with the hobby blade and popping the piece out "saving it for another use". The rest is relatively explanatory. Glued hasps and hinges, cut out or drilled holes for appropriate ventilation and made labels that are friendly for both layman and the educated alike. I used the sides of the lids to create a 2 bar spacer between the enclosures so I could attach them together so the lids could open without rubbing each other. I ended up using Cyriocosmus elegans and Hottentotta hottentotta. Anyways, here are the pictures:

I know, the labels aren't exactly accurate for the distro of H. hott or C. elegans, but there is literally not enough room on that enclosure to show the entirety of their locality. I figured watered down is better than nothing.

Those are some cool enclosures. Exactly the type I like for a display setup of smaller or growing species.

Do you have any top views from them?

Unfortunately, she snagged them up this morning, so no top view. Basically, the hottentotta has a 2" LD series by midget louver and the Cyriocosmus has about 20 or so 1/32 or smaller "made by twirling a hobby blade" holes.

Sounds good. I can't find any of those locally. You've done a good job! Much better than my 4" setups Very Happy

Those are some awesome looking enclosures.
Maybe you can add a small distribution map next time, they dont have to be big maps.
Im pretty sure no one is getting that open!

I got mine from a local container store. I believe they are called amac boxes or something. Basically polystyrene injection molded mass produced little boxes. Polystyrene is a heck of a lot less resilient than acrylic, making them very easy to modify.
