PostSubject: My first catch ever!   6/2/2008, 11:12 pm

So I went camping with the BugZoo last weekend up by Cougar Reservoir on the McKenzie River -- after finding a good talus slope during the day, we came back at night with my blacklight, and . . . . .

I caught two Uroctonus mordax!!! This is the species I keep looking for but can never find -- unfortunately, they're both female, and that's all I have at the moment. I found what looked like a 2I the next day while flipping rocks, but it got out through a ventilation hole in the container.

Keep an eye out on the Hike and Hunt Reports section in the next few days for pictures and a rundown of the whole thing. The school year is coming to a head and I don't really feel like going through photos for posting and editing right now.

One of the females I have at home is quite plump -- if she's gravid, then it means the Coast range populations have a different life cycle than the Cascade range, as the Cascade specimens already had this year's young at least a few weeks ago.

They probably do have different breeding periods(coastal being warmer faster than Mountains) and they probably have 2 or more broods a season, depending on gestation.

I just did an inspection -- I'm not so sure the new guys are U. mordax -- but they don't look like my P. boreus, either. I'm off to check on the other four species found in Oregon . . .

Oh, and on doing that inspection, I'm really thinking my big female U. mordax is indeed gravid. What a Face

Sorry, sorry . . . I should be doing homework, though. Sad Gimme a couple minutes.

Oh, and I eliminated the other four species . . . it's one or the other. I might ask on AB about distinguishing between P. boreus and U. mordax. I'm sure SHD will show up with denticle counts and metasomal granulation or something. Very Happy

You might want to try on ATS scorpion forum a couple people there will definitely know but sometimes it takes awhile for them to see it.

I posted on VL -- if I don't get any bites, I'll try AB, but I don't feel like joining another forum.

By the way, check out the Hikes and Hunts. Wink

If you let me have pics I can ask for you but they need to be of the legs, top of scorp, side shot, and front views. I am sure I will get an answer.Kari McWest and this other guy(I forget his name at the moment) specialize in US scorps.

I will checkout your posts in H&H.

Looking at your pics in the H&H the first one MIGHT be a Seradigitis sp. the second one is a male U.mordax and the tiny one I have no clue. From your pic on VL the second now looks like a juvenile U.mordax both bicolor morph.
I replyed on VL as well.

I'm deciding on a light morph of U. mordax.

Which is good, 'cause that's the species I was looking for in the first place. Razz
