Centruroides margaritatus Empty
PostSubject: Centruroides margaritatus   Centruroides margaritatus Empty6/9/2012, 11:36 am

I've seen so many different pictures of C. margaritatus that i've begun to doubt the ID of my group. Some of the pics i've seen labelled as C. margaritatus look more like C.bicolor while others seem to resemble C.gracillis, with a host of different morphs in between.
Does anyone have an ID key for C. margaritatus or can anyone confirm based on this picture that it is indeed C. margaritatus.

On Centruroides margaritatus (Gervais, 1841) and closely related species

I'm not really sure what your scorp is, I am by no means an expert on this genus.

GS has pics of C. margaritatus here: Centruroides margaritatus

Thanks Scorpion. Unfortunately the PDF link didn't work for me...for some reason abode reader doesn't want to work on my computer despite uninstalling and reinstalling...although i've read what there is about that revision on scorpion files but there was no ID key there as far as i could see.

The pics on GS's side look very much like what i've seen over here sold as C.bicolor (hence my confusion) because GS's pictures show a scorpion with much lighter coloured legs plus a more dense/pronounced grouping of trichobothria around the pedipals.

I don't know if this is because C.margaritatus (based on location) exhibits a greater variety of morphs or because dealers label a C.margaritatus as such based on their own opinions.

That's odd. Can you view it through a google doc? C. margaritatus google doc.

After looking at many pics labeled as C. margaritatus, I'm wondering the same things as you.

After a good read through that doc plus a re-examination of my scorp i'm coming to the conclusion that my margaritatus are in fact gracillis. I'm also wondering if a lot of the bicolors for sale are not actually C.edwardsii and/or C.margaritatus.

The subaculer tubercle of my scorp also seems more pronounced than that of margaritatus but seems to fit better with gracillis.

Still...i could be totally wrong Embarassed .. It's so annoying having doubts about some scorpions i brought in good faith as margaritatus.

Yeah, I was going to say that your scorps look like C. gracilis.
