PostSubject: "Lybian" scorpion--any guesses?   6/9/2012, 3:33 pm

Hi,

I am looking at a list for a Canadian animal dealer that includes a number of scorpions, most of which seem to be from Africa.

The list includes the following imported from Egypt (but not neccessarily originating there):

Black scorpion
Fat tailed scorpion
Lybian scorpion
Maurus scorpion
Death stalker
Green death stalker

The list also includes the following:

Asian scorpion
African black scorpion
Desert hairy scorpion
Red claw scorpion
Ghana emperor scorpion
Tanzanian red bark scorpion

I assume that the "black scorpion" from Egypt is probably A. bicolor. Does anyone have a guess as to what the "Lybian scorpion" and the "African black scorpion" might be?

As a rule of thumb i wouldn't buy a scorpion that wasn't named correctly with it's Latin name and nor would i trust a dealer that only sold scorpions by common names...Truth is mate, you could end up getting anything because many scorpions have an abundance of common names as there's no defined standards.
A Libyan scorpion could basically be any scorpion found in Libya and an African black scorpion could be any black scorpion found in Africa........and a dealer that only uses common names obviously doesn't know much about scorpions.

Probably but not conclusively ... His listing of a fat tailed scorpion from Egypt could also be an A. bicolor....and the African black scorpion could be a Parabuthus transvaalicus or a Parabuthus villosus or maybe something totally different...because these scorpions are also commonly named as fat tails..

Using common names is so confusing so my advice would be to ask him for the scientific names and if he fails at that find another dealer.

Pretty much my thoughts...I gave them a call and they clearly had no idea what species they have. Its hard to find a Canadian source for scorpions--never mind a KNOWLEDGEABLE source!

I have to admit, I'm almost tempted to order one of each just to see what they are! Thing is I don't want any really hot species (like Leurus or Androctonus) because I've got little kids, so I'd have to give them away.

Tarantula Canada has some C. gracilis for sale. (It's the only scorpion species they have though.)http://www.tarantulacanada.ca/English/English.htm

Hmmm...thanks. They didn't have those last time I checked. I was looking for a communal species (I was thinking C. vittatus) but these would work. A bit pricey...but they are in Canada! I'll give them a call...
