I am in need of assistance! Empty
PostSubject: I am in need of assistance!   I am in need of assistance! Empty3/23/2012, 5:25 pm

Hello,

Recently I decided I want to get a pet scorpion, since I saw them all the time at most of the pet stores I go to. So, about a week and a half ago, I bought an emperor scorpion. I have a ten gallon tank set up with coconut flake substrate mixed with some moss, and a couple curved pieces of bark to hide under. As well as a water dish and a fake plant, I try to keep the temperature between 70-90 using a one of those red night heat bulbs, and mist it as often as possible, I can get it up to 80% but it always drops down to around 40% really quick.

Now, the little guy seemed fine for the first couple days, he would walk around for a bit, and go hide at night. I did notice he tried climbing the walls of the tank a lot. I put a a cricket in the cage and he didn't make any sudden move to go eat it, at times the cricket would just walk right over him and the scorpion wouldn't move. now after maybe 3-4 days passed I stopped seeing it come out of from under the burrow. Even at night or in the early morning he was still underneath the bark. So later I picked it up to look, and he didn't move just stayed still for a while until I nudged it carefully with some tongs I bought at the pet store. and it started moving around a bit, not much though. it stayed under the bark for a long time, I didn't see it eat or even show and sign of acknowledgement to any of the crickets that I put in. I even lifted up the bark and held the crickets in front of him with the tongs. I went to a couple pet stores and they said he could just be getting used to the new environment, and such. I'm getting worried now because I haven't seen it eat and it's now really moving too much. I'm wondering if I should buy another one since they live together in the wild, and maybe it's "lonely", or something.

Any insight from more "experienced" scorpion owners?

First 40% humidity is way too low for an emp. Try pouring water on the substrate. I also recommend using a false bottom set-up.

Don't worry about it not eating. Scorpions can go a long time without eating. (Mine went over six months once.) Try feeding in a week or so.
P. imperator are burrowing scorpions, they spend most of their time in their burrows or hiding under bark. They are often called "pet holes" because of this trait.
Please don't lift up the bark to nudge your scorpion, I know it can be tempting, but you are stressing it out.
You should leave it alone, and let it get used to the new environment. A happy emp is one that stays in it's burrow. You might be able to see it come out late at night when the lights are off.

How big is your emp? Is your scorpion an adult? If it is, it should have a dark orange to red telson. If it has a pale orange telson, then it is either a juvenile or sub adult.
Do you know the gender of your scorpion?

As for adding another one, you can if you want to, but you really don't have to. Scorpions don't get "lonely".

Also, could you post pictures of your scorpion?

Welcome to the forum by the way.

My camera's out of battery right now so I can't take a picture, but I'm sure it's an adult, it looks healthy nothing out of the ordinary. I would say, just by guessing it's around six inches.

I didn't literally mean lonely. I thought because when I had bought the scorpion it was with a whole group of them, so maybe it's a big change and putting another scorpion would help it.

The only reason I "nudged" it was I hadn't seen it out or moving for a while and double checking that it was still alive.

and no I don't know it's gender.

If it ever comes out of it's hole I'll see if I can get a look. But from what I saw when I got it I think it's a male.
