PostSubject: Feeding mealworms   3/10/2012, 6:42 pm

Hello everyone,

My scorpion used to eat crickets at the store and now I successfully fed it crickets as well. However, I would like to also feed it mealworms, but it doesn't seem to give a damn about the mealworm. No matter if I leave it there or if I wiggle it in front of its mouth and pincers.

What is the best way for me to try and train it eating mealworms as well?

I currently feed it 2 times a week, for how long can I let it go with mealworms inside the terrarium but not being eaten until I should start to worry he may die? Will it really die of starvation with mealworms inside the terrarium?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

First, two times a week is a lot of food for a scorpion. I only feed mine once every 7-10 days. Don't worry about it not eating, scorpions will sometimes go months without food.
Also, what kind of scorpion do you have? Is it an adult?
I feed my P. imperator super worms (king mealworms) every once in a while, I just hold them in front of him until he grabs them. Not all scorpions like mealworms though, for example my Centruroides gracilis won't eat them.

Thanks for the reply. Smile

It's a Heterometrus longimanus, adult.

So can I keep trying to feed the mealworms until it accepts them?

You can purchase a mealworm bowl at any LPS. Its just a small bowl with a lip on it that the worms cant climb out of. The scorpion wanders around and finds the bowl and the juicy treats you left for it.

I know I have one of those, but it still doesn't care for them. It even goes inside the mealworm dish, stays there, does nothing to the worms and then comes out. But if I place a cricket inside the tank it eats it gladly. Just the mealworms it doesn't care for...

Should I just leave a mealworm in the dish there for some days? If it gets really hungry it will eventually eat it and not die from the lack of crickets right?

Try grabbing the mealworms with tongs and hold it in front of your scorpion.
You could also try super worms (king mealworms) they are several times larger than normal mealworms. Your scorpion will not die from not eating, some scorpions can go over a year without food. And if it won't eat mealworms, just stick to crickets.
Try waiting a week before feeding it again. Your scorpion may not be hungry.

try feeding once a week, and a little variety in feeders is good. Throw in some roaches

Good advice .. plus, meal worms (the big and small) are basically small bags of fat..and while fat has a lot of energy it doesn't have much else. A varied diet is the best way to make sure your scorpion receives all it's nutrients.. Wink

Yes that makes sense, that is why I am trying to feed it also mealworms, instead of just crickets. But with no luck so far, it doesn't give a damn for the mealworms... lol

I'll keep insisting.

I had the same problem. My emp wouldn't take a mealworm on tweezers or when i left it next to him when he was out; i manged to get him to eat it by dropping it outside his burrow when he was just sticking his claws out from under the rock. He just jumped out and picked it up and ate it. It took over an hour for him to eat it though.
