Conserving dead scorpion Empty
PostSubject: Conserving dead scorpion   Conserving dead scorpion Empty3/7/2012, 6:18 pm

Hello everyone.

I know this may sound morbid to some of you but that is not my intention. I'm wondering if when some of our most special specimens of scorpions die, how would it be possible to conserve them after death?

Would a jar with medical alcohol be able to do it somehow? Did anyone ever tried or has any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

I used to use casting resin.

That's beautiful. How can it be done? I have no experience with resins.

It's a bit tricky but after a couple of tries you should get the hang of it. Basically you simply mix x amount of resin with x amount of hardener (instructions will always be on the pack somewhere) and add that mix to your form with the scorpion inside.
The trick is to only do a thinish layer of mixed resin at a time otherwise the hardening process generates so much heat that it damages the specimen. Therefore, until you get the hang of it don't use your prime specimens.
I used to put a recently deceased specimen in the freezer until i was ready to put it into resin. Taking it from the freezer i'd let it thaw naturally until i could gently position it without breaking any of the legs. I used 3 layers of resin, letting it harden before pouring the next layer on in both specimens shown here which incidently are a R.junceus adult female (died shortly after moulting) and a H.longimanus that was dead on arrival.
