Other than keeping scorps I also enjoy keeping snakes. Here are a few pics of some that I keep. Sorry for the bad quality, most of the pics were taken with my phone, seeing as my camera decided to stop working.

Aurora House Snake (Lamprophis aurora)

Cross Marked Whipsnake (Psammophis crucifer)

I love the third pic. The snake looks very grumpy with you haha.

Is the shieldnose trying to mimic a cobra?? Is it venomous??

Lol, yeah the whipsnake is a very inquisitive snake.
Yes it is, it only doesnt have a hood, but makes up for it in attitude. When he strikes he actually lifts his whole body off of the ground. His venom isnt deadly, but will certainly put you in the hospital. There have been 2 recorded deaths from Aspidelaps scutatus, so I wouldnt mess around with him.

They are really awesome snakes to keep, my favourite of all my snakes. They are readily available here for very cheap, so would have guessed that they would be all over the show in Europe. Why in the freezer??

Prolapsed cloaca. I was supposed to take it to the vet but the owner took too long o deliver the snake to me.
Operation was done immediately, he died 24h after.
The keeper never cared enough to take him back so for the time being it's in our personal "morgue"

That sucks. I hate irresponsible keepers like that. If you cant care for it or if you dont care about it, you shouldnt be keeping it. Good on you for trying to save its life!

How big do they actually get? I've been reading different numbers, anything between a 1 and 3 ft.

Would love to get my hands on a pair and try to get them to more enthusiasts in my country.

Males grow to between 15-23 inches and females 27-35 inches. They can grow bigger, but thats very rare and would be old animals over say 8 years old.

They are nice to breed as well, because they double clutch.

PostSubject: Re: Some of the snakes I keep   Some of the snakes I keep Empty3/8/2012, 9:33 am

Thanks for the info shadowfoot.
Didn't know they can double clutch.
There are only a few of them in my country. One local breeder has tried breeding them, but as far as I know, he was able to get only 3 hatchlings 2-3 years ago, out of a total of 4 eggs.

It was actually our first choice for a beginner snake, but due to availability we ended up getting the BP.

Update. Got this little guy a few days ago. Measures in at an amazing 13cm, they grow to about 60cm on average, so he has some work to do.
Sorry for the bad pics, didnt want to stress him with an extensive photo shoot.

He seems to appear very "well built" for a 13cm snake. Nice!

Yes they are very stocky, I cant wait till he gets older. They only feed on toads and frogs, so he is getting frog and toad drumsticks at the moment.
