Thinking about switching to canned crickets Empty
PostSubject: Thinking about switching to canned crickets   Thinking about switching to canned crickets Empty2/5/2012, 6:42 pm

Hello, I've been running into a lot of problems trying to keep the store bought crickets alive. I will always find at least 3 dead within the first week and I started buying 10 at a time. In my experience, my emps will never actually hunt for a cricket, I've spoiled them to the point when they will only eat if I give the cricket to them via tweezers. Sometimes they become confused and attack leaving it dead and mutilated. However, they will still eat it. So do you guys think it's a good idea to try that out? Also, does anybody know how long canned insects last? This is what I;m looking at: Amazon Canned Crickets

Should I stick with crickets or try grasshoppers or river shrimp?

You should get some roaches and feed those to them too. Dubais you can place them on their backs and they kick and wiggle their feet drawing the emps over to them. But ive been known to head crush the roaches before I feed them to the scorps. Still kick and wiggle around. Never used canned crickets so can offer insight on that.

You have no way of telling how well feed the crickets were before put in that can.

Well, I tried finding out what the crickets were packaged in, for example water, "cricket juice", etc and can't find anything using google. That would be concern #1 for me. Also, like Will3 said, you have no idea from just looking at that page what the crickets were fed before being canned. That would be concern #2.

Also, I would hope you would not just feed those, but also vary their diet a little to include other little "treats", like mealworms etc.

Just my 2 cents.

Alright, thank you very much for the input. I'll do some more research on them. How often should I give them mealworms?

Meal worms are high in fat I have seen on here. I think a good diet would consist of 70% roaches 20%crickets and 10% meal worms. Or something like that. Ive read that somewhere in someones post.

Adult crickets from the LPS are usually close to end of life. If you get medium sized crickets, you can keep them alive for weeks. Just give them food, water and warmth.
