PostSubject: Help.   1/25/2012, 9:41 pm

Hey guys,

Does anyone know if floral foam is harmful for scorpions? I am thinking about making a tunnel and sort of a burrow hide out for some new scorpions, but don't know about the chemicals or anything harmful like that. If i wash it or maybe boil it and then stick in exoTerra soil or sand for a week will it help at all?

I think that stuff is pretty brittle isnt it? I may be worried they would try to dig into it. I know you can get some foam boards from homedepot/lowes stores could seal them together ,cut ,mold , silicone and cover with coconut fiber.

I have a book called Arachnomania by Phillipe de Vosjoli. It's about tarantulas and scorpions. In the T section he uses floral foam to create burrows. Whether that means it is definately safe or not I don't know, but he seems to rate it highly.

Lot's of people build backgrounds and decor for their vivariums using kingspan foam or polystyrene. They shape it to what they want, then use tile grout to cover it and give it some strength. You can then either paint it (or not if you like the grey colour) and seal it with yacht varnish/odourless pva or coat it in pva and then pour over a load of sand to stick to it. Lot's of useful info about this on various reptile forums.

The other option is to use a substrate that allows the scorpions to burrow themselves. That would be my prefered method lol.

What species is it that you are thinking of getting??

yes the foam falls off really easy. i licked it last night just to see what it tasted like, i didn't taste anything awful or sour so? lol. and i'm still alive today should i eat it next?

I am getting a pair (male/female) of A. australis i know they are not burrowers but i intend on making them more of a tunnel than straight down cave. i don't want to keep them together only when mating.

My first idea was to use the sand we have here in south carlonia. If you dig about 3 ft down you will find dirt that's colored orange, and very hard and squishy and will dry out if left outside. kind of like clay. I will defiantly check out the kingspan foam and the foam boards at Lowes and do some research hopefully i find something.

Thanks for the help Smile!
