It helps in keeping the humidity intact for forest scorps such as Emps.
I do not think its for looks, items that beautifies the enclosure stays on top of the substrate not under. Personally i do not practise this due to the additional weight gain and other factors, however there're peeps here that practise this setup, more replies will come Smile

Meanwhile, you may wish to search "false bottom setup" in this forum or google for many good read about them.

Zoo Med makes an expanded clay product called hydroballs that can be used for false bottom setups and is lighter than aquarium gravel. And as GS mentioned, there are several good threads in this forum that discuss false bottom setups and how to build them. Both my emperor tank and millepede tank have false bottoms and they work well to keep up the humidity with minimal maintenance.

For the love of god go with the clay balls if you do. I use false bottoms in my "humid" tanks and I gotta tell you.... Used gravel the first time and the 30g tank was practically UNMOVABLE... Weighed more than my 45g... lol. The clay works well and is very lightweight

Lucky for me that my tank is not intended to be moved then. I did have to move it once though. The gravel does make it very heavy. False bottom setups work very well to keep the humidity high.
