So this much is already known, SCORPIONS ROCK!!! So anyhow, ive got 2 flat rocks and 2 emperors, all 4 are healthy and happy, but im really wanting another one. One thats not "HOT", or always hiding in a burrow. Not that I am asking if there is one out there that keeps our hours as their own but one that is more apt to come out and wander around. Just wondered if there is one that would fit that style. Ive seen alot but most ive seen are hot ones. And I figured who better to ask than everyone here. I was watching a Desert Hairy at the pet store, but from what ive been reading those are ready to fight at the first sign of movement.
And its not like im looking for one that I can pick up and cuddle with...... My house stays at 70-72 degrees through out the year. So one that could thrive in those temps would be suitable.

Most scorpions need a relatively high heat gradient in order to thrive. However, there are some exotic mountain species as well as U.S natives such as U. mordax, Centruroides (vittatus, gracilis, guanensis, hentzi) that would fit the bill. There are a lot of cool non hot species that are both part and not a part of the buthidae family. Unfortunately, most scorpion species do need some sort of heat gradient higher than the 70 degree range. I have a few species I would be willing to sell that you might be interested in as well as a vast amount of knowledge I can share free of charge Razz . If you're interested, shoot me a pm.

I should have clarified, I understand that they will need heat, just looking for one that takes a lower temperature better than some others. I have heat lights on my other 2 tanks, but was thinking I could get one that was a little more....... hardy? More forgiving for temperature drops lets say.
I can heat the tank if I need to, Maybe im just being to meticulous on the 2 tanks I have now, you know how it is, newer toys get more attention. That may be a bad analogy, but im thinking you know what im trying to say. But yea, PM will be sent. Thanks

I have a H. arizonesis (Desert Hairy) and it's not aggressive at all. When disturbed, it scampers down its burrow. It's often out at night and sometimes during the morning. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. I just check the temps in Phoenix, AZ every couple of weeks and try to come close. In the summer, I use a heat lamp to keep the tank 85F-95F. In the winter, I turn off the lamp and keep the tank at room temp (60F-70F).

The Desert Hairy is my favorite scorpion so far, but the initial tank setup takes a little time. It needs a dry packed sand/clay substrate and lots of it. The substrate is mixed, moistened thoroughly and allowed to dry completely. The drying takes about 2 weeks. This creates a substrate that is hard enough to hold burrows and tunnels, but soft enough to dig in. Desert Hairy's love to dig and tunnel.

You won't regret getting a Desert Hairy, but do get your tank setup and dried out before adding the scorpion. I used a 30/70 mix if excavator clay/play sand and it worked out well. I house mine in a 12x12x12 inch exo-terra enclosure, but the next haddy I get will go into a standard 10 gallon aquarium (more room for digging tunnels). Dry packed sand weighs 13lbs/gal, so expect your tank to be quite heavy. If you search this forum for "Hadrurus arizonesis", you'll find several good examples of haddy enclosures.

They had sold the Desert Hairy, but thats good because it will give me time to set up the tank. And they have a list that I can put my name on, they will find me one if they can. And I picked up my starter colony of Dubais..... should have stated 2nd or even 3rd molts. Could fit all 100 of them in a teaspoon. But it only cost me 14 bux.

You could always order a Desert Hairy here or here. You would have to pay for shipping though.
