Hides and ventilation Empty
PostSubject: Hides and ventilation   Hides and ventilation Empty11/1/2011, 7:14 am

Hi all
Im setting up a tank for my two inch P.cavimus (I know its not an emperor but their almost identical)
Does it need a hide or will it be okay with a small burrow in the substrate?
How much ventilation should I add to the tub? there are already a few holes just beneath the lid on each side but im not sure if it will be enough.
Cheers

Its alright to post here.
Provision of hide is recommended. But a 'hide' not necessary means a log or a slate for the scorpion to hide under. As long as it can find solitude in darkness where they will be comfortable, a burrow can be a kind of hide as well Smile

If space allows, no harm adding one or two on the substrate surface. Your scorpion would able to select the best spot to regulate the humidity/ temperature required.

As for ventilation, i will choose to increase rather than to restrict it for the sake of bumping up the humidity. The right humidity can always be achieved by adding sufficient water to the substrate but if ventilation is insufficient.. you'll get problems like molds.. flies' larvae.. etc..

First.. what tank are you using? dimension? and how big are your scorps?

The tank is a small storage tub which is roughly 6 inches cubed. The scorpion is roughly 2 inches long. I have a good few spare tanks and storage tubs so I can upgrade the tank if I need too...
Also the substrate is damp eco earth

For me, i would do a screen mesh for the top lid and a single row of holes across the higher perimeter of the tub. Something like this below, on a small scale of cos, but the ratio is there..

If you find it a hassle to do the mesh lid, the minimum amount of holes in ratio to the tub size.. i will do something like this below. (Imagine it is a cube size and ignore the mesh if you not doing it, just replace the mesh with more holes)

Well, you can try increasing more air vents for your tub at your comfort level first.. if required, you can always add more if you notice molds etc..

Apart from feeding tongs.. and hot glue gun.. personally i think this is another must-get for invert keepers who like to d.i.y stuff Smile

Soldering iron

When using it to make multiple holes in a tub.. i would recommend you putting a fan in-front of you but with the wind blowing away from you. Kinda acts like a suction to drain the melted plastic fumes away from you..

Keen eye Bex!

My main B.lateralis colony are housed in a exact replica of this too Smile
That ventilation is really required.. when amassed in large numbers e.g. 1000 adults..
They kinda "sweat together" and the humidity raises up fast.. and the food we throw in will get mold quickly.. Rolling Eyes
