PostSubject: My Hottentotta C. problem   My Hottentotta C. problem Empty10/17/2011, 11:19 am

Just came back after 2 weeks home and my scorpions were fine except for my 2 Hottentotta Coboverdensis. They still don't seem to mind it but I wouldn't be happy if it progresses to something terminal.

They are both in their separate containers but both seem to catch something Sad

they don't seem to have the same situation. I am really fond of these so please help me identify what is wrong. One of them will molt soon I think.

second, don't mind the tail it is just sand as I flipped him over.

I tried to clean off that white stuff from the guy on the first picture with a very delicate brush but it looks looks like it is very sturdy stuff. I managed to clear a peace of it from his tail and it seems to be some kind of crystal or at least looks like it...

I already put them in another container and cleaned the terarium and disposed the old substrate

Looks dirty or something. Like Bex said, if it comes off, it should not be too worrying.

Based on the pictures youve provided, I'd say it is only a hardened mud or dirt and nothin to worry about.

If it isnt an adult, that dirt would wore off after it undergo a molting process.

If it is an adult, just let it be, my heterometrus longimanus has the same white markings and dirt like thingy but I prefer not to remove it as it would create more stress. After 5 months of having my longi with these markings, so far there are no problems. She even popped while having those marks.

Hope it helps Smile

Btw, no offense but your scorps looks like a HH Smile lol!

Hottentotta hottentotta are usually very sturdy scorpions but under extreme conditions whereby too much humidity and inadequate ventilation is given. They can get mycosis and die just like the regular deserts' specimen.

Thats good enough bud Smile

I keep mine as follows:

2.instar > 5.instar :
Weekly mist at a single side of the enclosure's wall. Not more then 1/3 of the substrate area should be dampen because of the misting

6.instar > 7.instar :
Offered a small water bowl at a corner of the enclosure, filled once a week.

Sounds pretty much the same what I'm doing Smile

Great info on the earlier instars! Hopefully will soon need to use it Smile

You will need to use it. That is for sure!

After giving away dozen of them in batches... they're still hanging around the number of 500 pcs now..
its definitely NOT a good thing.

Seriously What a Face

Feeding is quite fast with a weekly rain of roaches for a communal setup. It's like a mini eco system in the H.hottentotta tank. Scorplings are born every once in a while.. and weaker ones are cannibalized while growing up.. The fittest survives.

When there is a need to harvest scorplings.
Simply lay a wet tissue at different areas.. and it'll be packed with them within mins.

Sounds like fun.
How big enclosure do you have for that big communal setup?
