White creatures in water? Empty
PostSubject: White creatures in water?   White creatures in water? Empty10/14/2011, 10:36 am

Had my current Emp tank set up for at least 2-3 months now. All has been fine but within the past two weeks I've noticed that the water bowl keeps getting invaded by small white bugs. Really tiny though. They sort of group together at first then start to dart about on the surface of the water.

Any idea as to what these are and how to get rid of them if I need to?

can you see them on the substrate??

usualy mites go like this....

good mites- move around quickly are small and eat dead stuff run around the substrate.

Bad mites - stick to the limbs of your scorpion move slow seem slightly fatter than good mites

Nope, never seen them on the substrate of anywhere near the scorpion.

These things are really tiny though, barely visible. Can only see them if I have a good look at the water dish.

No signs of anything on the substrate. I always check the tank for leftover food too, so there'll be no dead crickets lying around.
Just had a peep at the scorp too, all fine, no signs of mites on him at all.

These things are really confusing me =S

Hmm, they're parasites aren't they? Any idea as to how I can get rid of them?

chuck the water and get a new bowl... from memory part of their life cycle is inside a host animal, so if it is nematodes they are either all ready in your scorp or will be soon.

New bowl it is then!
Been changing the water when ever I see the weird little things appear.

Hopefully they haven't got to my scorp.
Any signs I should look out for?

um...nematodes in the water again, this would mean they are in the scorp.
however, they may not be nematode worms, a picture will confirm it.

i would nuke the whole enclosure.

you can see nematodes hanging around the mouth, but they live inside its entire "digestive"tract.
if you notice your scorp killing prey and not eating it,eating substrate or drinking water extensively itd be wise too look at its mouth.

Aha, I get ya.

Will try and get a picture when they next appear.
They don't look like worms or anything though. Just tiny dots that can move about the surface pretty fast.

Been keeping a close eye on it, hasn't been behaving differently apart from getting more aggressive lately. Just chills in it's hide, comes out for a wonder, eats and goes back to the hide. The mouth looks normal too.

Thanks for the info btw guys Smile

Are they spring-tails? They are very small white animals that jump. You will see them often in the waterdish. The only way to get rid of them would be to change the substrate and nuke the waterdish and bark. (Or whatever you have in your tank) You can put isopods in your tank to clean up after your scorpion.

I had mites (harmless ones) in my substrate....was told they were wood mites from the chips I was using under the substrate. Never bothered my Emp, but looked really nasty. I've since changed my substrate to just plain coco fiber about 6 inches deep...no more mite problems since, and Emp seems to like it better (burrowing more often).

No idea what they are, haven't seen them anywhere but the water dish. They are small and white, but they just seem to dart around on the surface of the water.

Gonna try and change the substrate soon, and buy a new dish, see if that solves the problem.
Will also give everything a good disinfecting.

Never seen any signs of mites in the tank either, I usually check the tank pretty well every day too.

Sounds like regular white mites. They like it moist.

Springtails are beneficial as a clean up crew and will not harm your scorpion. If that is indeed what they are, consider yourself lucky and leave them in!

Here is what the look like.
