| So I have been after these guys for a while. Since I won't drive and the best spots for scorpion hunting are miles upon miles outside of the city, I have had little opportunity to get out looking for them. Anuroctonus phaiodactylus live in only one are of my home state. A recent classifieds transaction led me to a new acquaintance that shares a bit of interest in going blacklighting. We went out last weekend only to find P. boreus after P. boreus. We knew we were in the right area, but were missing something. Last nights adventure proved to be much more successful. It seems that these scorpions prefer hard packed dirt in grassy, hilly areas. On our previous trek I had noticed some spots that I felt looked rather promising so we went to check them out. We weren't out of the car for ten minutes before I spotted one. I knew the second the glow hit my eyes that it was the beast we had come for. Over the course of the evening we managed to capture seven of them. Four were adult males, and three unsexed sub-adults. We saw several females hanging out of their burrows, but they quickly retreated when the light hit them. The females of this species rarely leave their burrow so catching one involved an excavation, and they dig pretty decent sized burrows. An interesting note: These scorpions were out and actively on the hunt last night. The night temperature in the West Desert last night was around 60 F, or 15.5 C. Still active! Here are a few pictures of the three I kept. The two adults. The bigger of the two. Notice anything strange about the acleus? The smaller adult. He's lost a foot to mycosis it seems. The sub-adult. It's about as big as a. adult P. boreus. The Sub-adult will be going into a tank with deep substrate and a small partial false bottom. They are hard to get through molts in captivity. These guys are awesome. They are extremely defensive as is evident from the threat posture in the photographs. Another common name for them is the swollen stinger scorpion. If you didn't notice they have a pronounced bulb at the base of the acleus. This is only present on adult males. I love their black fingers, and the attitude! The juvie is the meanest of the bunch. Not bad for a 150 mile round trip! I'm very happy to have finally added these to my collection. | |

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, those little tubs with black sand were the temporary containers. | |

| Nice! They do resemble a "Hector version" of Scorpio maurus palmatus (although there's no such species) with their darken chelas' tip Very cool Their backs has been polished from pic #8 onwards? Glossy!

| They have a pretty mild venom from what I understand. They belong to the same family as Hadrurus sp. scorpions, Iuridae. | |

| Yes GS, they do indeed resemble a "Hector" version of Scorpio maurus. That was my exact though when I first saw them! | |

| I watched arachnophobia last night. I'm pretty sure the female T they used at the end was not at all like the other spiders they were using for the movie. I was laughing pretty hard. | |
