PostSubject: strange behavior    strange behavior Empty7/4/2011, 3:08 am

I have two female emps and one hasn't hidden in a few weeks, just been sitting out in the open around the tank. I can't currently take any pics but its a lot skinner than the other one that's in there with her. I'm not sure if its because the other one is just eating more, I've seen the one that wont hide catch food and not fully eat it all, or if its because the other one is gravid, it's looking kinda plump but not enough that I could be sure of anything. Any ideas as to why it wont hide? If the other one is in fact gravid would that be causing it?

My female has been doing the same thing as of about a week ago. During day light hours she just sits on top of one of the hides sometimes. When I woke up this morning she was there, and now as I just got home she is again. her tail is stretched across her back to where her pedipalps are, and her chelicerea are protruding. She is in a grooming stance, just not moving, I'm just confused as to why she is out in day light. Not fat enough to be gravid, and not skinny enough to be starving.

This is the one that wont hide

strange behavior P7040410

and here is the other one

strange behavior P7040411

here they are together

strange behavior P7040412

strange behavior P7040413

I have no idea if one is just eating more than the other, or if I can be expecting lil emps running around soon, And if either case is the reason the one just sits out? Right after taking those pics of them together, the bigger one went into a hide, while the other one followed it up to the hide and then just sat outside it. Before recently they never had any problems sharing the same hide, and I've never seen them fight except here and there if one has food and the other gets too close. So any ideas?

oh and I just saw this awesomeness on the glass

I'm not sure if it's related to the behavior your seeing, but your substrate looks to be bone dry and the
water bowl empty. Give these gals some moisture, it will benefit both of them. Your substrate should
be the same color as the bits in the water bowl. Not soaking wet, but damp to the touch.

Also, are you sure these are both emperors? The smaller one looks like it might be a Pandinus Cavimanus.

I actually took those pics right before cleaning out dead cricket parts, cleaning out and refilling the water dish, and pouring water around the tank. The substrate actually is damp just under the surface in the pics, like if I brush some to the side it'll look a lot darker, but the top dries out fast cause I have two lamps for the plants I have in there.

And I couldn't tell you for a fact if its an emp, you would probably know better than I would haha. I got them both from the same store being sold as emps, but not at the same time.

they are both emperors now worries. One of them is just a different color. emperors could be anything from greenish through black to brown ( like one of my emps) in color.

Are you referring to the white strip? Is that Emperor poo?

Strange question I know, I'm relatively new and have not seen this yet.

Thanks

Well the answer to that question was made obvious today when we found a bunch of lil ones in the tank haha. They are already off her back so how long might they have been in there already?

Also the hide she typically uses prevents us from seeing her at all, and isn't very easy to lift out to check on things, and I want to keep an eye on them for a lil while. Would it stress her out too much to keep it out and make her use the other hide? That one can be seen into and we can tell how the lil ones are doing.

They still on her back? If so leave her be for now. As long as everything is good in her tank and she feels secure the you should have some healthy babies running around in no time. It's really when they feel threatened on insecure that they abort their brood. It's basic survival instinct.
