Mycosis risk for Opistophthalmus? Empty
PostSubject: Mycosis risk for Opistophthalmus?   Mycosis risk for Opistophthalmus? Empty8/3/2013, 8:59 pm

Hey guys. Anyone have any ideas on the mycosis risk for Opistophthalmus spp? I redid the cage for my O. wahlbergii today to make it a bit more lively and to make the substrate able to keep mid range humidity levels easier. I mixed excavator clay, peat moss and sand had to get the substrate wet in order to get it to set properly for her to burrow in. I was thinking of putting her in there while the substrate is still wet, but I'm not sure if that would be a problem. I know these guys are considered semi-arid and take more humidity than the usual desert species (In the realm of 65% if what I have read on this forum is correct). So would logic say that they are not terribly prone to mycosis?

They are semi arid yes so what I do is wet a small part of the substrate and let droplets catch on the side but you should never ever mist them because they are still prone to mycosis.

Take any caresheet advice wherever you may find it as a guide and not gospel. Personally i'd say a true humidity of 65% over any extended period will in all likelihood result in mycosis for Opistophthalmus spp.
Follow shadowfoot's advice and keep that small dampened area to approx one quarter of the floor plan. Allow it to dry completely out for a week or 2 at a time before re-dampening.
Finally, ensure good air circulation/ventilation and you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Good to know. I will keep that in mind. I have been keeping a little higher humidity in her enclosure most of the time because of previous advice that I had read from people on the forum a while back. Shocked I hope I haven't hurt her already. She stays pretty active and eats extremely well, so I'm thinking nothing's too bad. I have seen some dark spots on her, but I'm pretty sure it's her natural coloration as the spots are always symmetrical. They appear exactly the same on each side of her body. I'll try to post pics later if I can get to her. I put her in her newly renovated enclosure last night after having two 75w bulbs in there for 2 solid days to dry out the enclosure. She had a full burrow done by the time I woke up this morning. She comes out often, typically, but she's incredibly fast. I open the lid and she's already disappeared back in.

No problem man. The dark spots are their joints in the legs, mine also has these and when they start to darken in colour it does almost look like mycosis.

Yep. There and the last sternite segments before the metasomal segments. The ones that are more triangular that narrow into the ms's. Both are dark and, as I said, symmetrical with the other side.

Thanks for this thread, I'm glad to know that I've been keeping my O. wahlbergii correctly.
