Separating babies from mum Empty
PostSubject: Separating babies from mum   Separating babies from mum Empty3/10/2009, 5:18 pm

It would be a while away but, i am pretty sure that my emperor is gravid. I know that after the second instar they can be separated from their mother, but i wont be allowed to have another tank to move the babies to. So can they live together with their mum rather than being separated?

I can get a bigger tank but i dont think i will be allowed 2 because i only have a small bedroom and there is no where else to put another one.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Although one option i can think of which i wouldn't really want to do is after the second or third instar, give the mum back to the shop keeper.

you could advertise the bambino's for sale on here and various other forums if you want to cut the numbers down.

I'm sure that someone can advise you about whether or not to keep them with mum, this is not a species I have had success in breeding but quite a few people on here have.

I belive (I might be wrong) that emps are quite ok to have in the same tank as long as they are family. Different sized scorps can be a problem and cannibalism during molting with younger scorps is a normal problem, but I think emps are very kind in this way. I've seen (there should be a thread here about this) other emps protecting or acting like they were bodyguards when another emp is molting.
I've not raised emp scorplings from birth yet, but the ones I have now are all family and they seem to enjoy eachothers company. The person I bought them from have all his scorps in the same tank, both adults and new scorplings, without any problems.

I will be so bold I will say you can keep them in the tank with their mother. They will all be siblings together with their mother and I think that should be ok. At least with emps.

I haven't experianced any problems with canabalism in younger scorpions, quite the opposite. the scorpions around the moulting ones will get very defensive of thier cagemate.

I've known several people to keep the offspring in with mom; it shouldn't be a problem.

Moved to emperor forum.

My pandinus imperator babies I kept in with mum for 2 weeks and 5 days. they came off the back at 2 weeks. I Wish I had kept them in together as my Heterometrus babies I kept in with mum until 3rd instar, it would have gone on forever but sadly the mother randomly passed away.

Mum and babies of the pandinus and het, from what ive seen are OK and can go on and on and on without the NEED to take them out. Some do for fear of them eating each other.

My babies were 19 pandinus imperators. Only 3 are alive, all the others just died randomly.

My het babies were 23 at birth and rehoming into a bigger tank and 20 are currently alive...all in the same tank and happy.

So munching DOES happen but you cant even make sure they all survive in their own tanks because mine all just died. So there is no 100% way to keep them all alive

I really need your help! My emperor scorpion had about 20 babies a week ago. There are 7 left, one of which is crawling around the enclosure by itself. I'm worried about the little guy. At first I thought it was dead but I'll see it move occasionally. It's little stinger was caught on a piece of the bedding so i tried to help it break free. kinda looked like dead skin hanging off... I don't know if its better to just leave it alone or put it in a separate area so nothing happens to it. I'm not sure if it is molting because i read that can happen a week after birth and if it is molting i really don't want to mess with it and cause damage.

I've also read about people putting bottle caps in the enclosure, but what exactly does this help with?

I've had 4 emperor scorpions for about a year and a half. I sadly lost one of them that i thought was pregnant about a month ago. Caring for the larger ones really isn't that difficult, but as I'm reading more and more about the babies I'm having more and more concerns that I'm not doing everything i can to ensure them living.

This thread is quite old. Dead for over two years.

It sounds like your babies are starting to molt. The one with dead skin hanging off it's tail probably didn't molt completely. Are you sure you are meeting the humidity requirements for your emperors?

Bottle caps are for water dishes.
