Mould on substrate? Empty
PostSubject: Mould on substrate?   Mould on substrate? Empty8/27/2011, 1:25 pm

Hi, I'm new here so I wasn't sure where to post this...

But yeah, when I woke up this morning there appeared to be mould (white and fluffy) on the substrate of my Scorpions tank. Any ideas as to why this has happened? This is the first time I've seen this.

Maybe the humidity or temperature has gotten too high?
The humidity is usually between 70 to 90% and about 30C according to my thermometer, but I don't trust my thermometer so much any more, it's getting old and needs replaced.

Some mold in emperor enclosures is fairly common. I don't have any on my substrate (coco fiber), but I have some
small patches on the exposed portion of my terra cotta hides. This I just live with. It doesn't seem to spread, but
it doesn't go away either. Log hides develop mold on the inside surface in a couple of days, so I avoid them in
tropical habitats.

Increasing your ventilation should help combat the mold. Other folks here might have additional remedies. What are
you using for substrate?

Hmm, that's all good then, I thought something was wrong. I just picked out the bit that had the mould on it. The hides are fine though, I have a coconut shell and a couple of cork-bark hides for him.

Good idea, I'll have to try that.
I'm using ProRep Spider Life substrate. Had no problems with it up until now, hopefully ventilating the tank will stop the problem though.

Thanks Smile

Hi, and thanks Very Happy

That's all cool then, it'll be easy enough to solve, the lid on my enclosure has ventilation flaps, I'll just leave them both open to see if it help.
Good to know too Smile Although 30c is just an approximation, the thermometer I have it practically an antique. Going to invest in a new one soon.

I love hand held IR thermometers. Once you have one, you'll find a myriad of uses for it and wonder how you ever got by without one.
