Emp died while moulting Empty
PostSubject: Emp died while moulting   Emp died while moulting Empty7/17/2011, 9:33 pm

Hi to all

I'm new to this site & new to keeping scorps. Got 1 around christmas, only a baby though but he recently died while moulting. It appears he got stuck in his old shed. I did what I thought I could, put baby oil on the legs that were stuck & the claw that stuck, tried pulling the old shed off & raised his humidity but unfortunatly he still didnt make it.

I wont let this put me off keeping scorps but I would like some advice on what I did wrong & how I could prevent future deaths. He was tiny, legspan about the size of a 10p coin.

Hoping I get some good advice, thanks to all repliers in advance......

What were it's captive conditions? Any pictures of your enclosure?

I dont have any pictures of the enclosure, dont know how to post them on here.

Its a clear plastic enclosure about the size of a 1KG butter tub, 4 holes in lid corners about 5mm diameter. Had about 1 inch of substrate (dont know what substrate), a fizzy drink bottle top sunk into the substrate for a water bowl & a cork bark arch about a third the size of the tub. I kept the substrate damp & put half the tub on a heat mat so ther was lots of humidity.
Long & short, it was the same conditions & enclosure that I bought it from the shop in except I gave it more humidity.

Should it have had more ventilation? Any advice please, I WILL be getting another one & I dont want to loose it again.

I'm not completely inexperienced with arachnids, been keeping tarantulas for over 18 months & got 7 now. We also have 8 snakes & a beardie......

Well can't say for certain what caused it's untimely demise, but a few things I would advise changing for you next setup.

1. More substrate. Emperors burrow. They are hard wired by nature to do so. Even when provided with a hide they will burrow underneath it. You should provide at least 15cm of substrate for an adult emperor.

2. Heat mats under the tank are a big no no. In order to properly regulate their body temperature they burrow. Down the burrow to cool off, and up to get warmer. Under tank heaters mess with their natural inclination to retreat away from the heat. They will go down the burrow and just get hotter and hotter which can lead to a steamed scorpion. The best place for a UTH is on the side of the enclosure, but better than that is a heat bulb. Get an infrared one. They do not see red light so it won't disrupt their nocturnal activities, and there are no harmful UV rays.

3. Ventilation is good. Despite what you may read about keeping humidity through restricted ventilation, it is not good. They need fresh air. Keep humidity up with a false bottom setup.

Finally, here is a
care sheat for your Emperor. This includes a link that details how to set up a false bottom.

Oh, and don't listen to the dummies ate the pet shop. 99% of the time they have no idea what they are talking about. Mad

Best of luck with your future friend!
