PostSubject: Question about separated chitin plates   5/22/2011, 11:25 pm

I have two male Emperors, one of which I noticed developed, or undeveloped, you might say, a slight showing of skin between the chitin plates nearing the tail. I'll post pictures, don't you worry. (I'm worrying like crazy, I just got them a week ago from the pet store!!) They're eating fine, each once every two days, including tonight, gut-loaded crickets (not the black kind.)

So... yeah... Basically wondering if anyone else knows what the heck is going on with him, he seems a little sluggish tonight, normally he's very defensive to touch, but I picked him up by the tail segment just before the telson, like you're supposed to ( ? ) to relocate him for the pictures, and he just hung there, wiggling his feet a little. His energy seems to be up and down, I'm very worried. He was basking in the Infrared light I have, 50 Watts, I turned it on for a better picture, and maybe thought he was cold. This was about 10pm, so naturally I had the rest of the lights out.

Temperature: 24*C
Humidity: 83%
Substrate: Coco-Peat (Eco Earth Brand)

Looks normal to me. You can up the humidity for a couple of days and see if that makes any difference.

Hmm I see what you mean where just 2 plates are separated but perhaps picking it up by the tail wasn't the best thing to do to quite a heavy scorpion, I think it's best to just coax it into a tub.

Also there's nothing wrong with black crickets, scorpions aren't racist Laughing

Black:

Banded:

I usually have all 3 at the ready to give a bit of variety.

Hi welcome to the forum...you have to remember some of the forum is from uk and some from the US and a few from else where so depending on when you post some of us will be nicely tucked up in bed asleep lol

one thing most people would say picking an emp up by the tail is not good, these scorps are quite heavy so cant do them much good, if you need to move them just used a cricket tub and coax them in with tweezers or something simular.

as for the scorp i see where you mean the segmants are slightly more seperated then the rest, i wouldnt worry to much about it, your subsrate in the pics looks dry so maybe give it a good spray and dump a jug of water straight on, and yeah bump the temps up a bit we have our bulb on 24/7 so its sits around 26/28C most of the time with a slight drop at night, 24 is the low end of what they need really, our emp comes out to stilt/bask under the lamp everyday Smile
