Mushrooms in the enclosure Empty
PostSubject: Mushrooms in the enclosure   Mushrooms in the enclosure Empty5/18/2011, 5:12 pm

I have 3 hides in the P. Imp. tank but they all use the same one. In one of the empty hides, a bit to the side of the ones that they do use, I seem to be fathering mushrooms. There's a good 6 in their, about an inch in length and white. There is also one by the water tank, I plucked it to get a better pic, but despite my efforts, the pictures always came out blurry. I recently put in a pothos plant... don't know if that means anything, but, the mushrooms are not growing by the plant. Cause for concern? They've been in their for maybe 2 weeks. I think I should remove them, not sure though. Had a helluva 2 weeks...

I read on a thread somewhere that the spores for mushrooms are everywhere. They grow in greenhouses commonly and since an emp tank is in effect a small greenhouse, they will occasionally sprout. In that thread it said that they do not pose any immediate danger to the animals, but can poison the water if they should die and fall into the dish. It is probably best to remove them.

I've read about this happening to a tarantula in a quarterly invert publication. However, in that case the mushroom was the very common "houseplant mushroom," Leucocoprinus birnbaumii. Those guys are bright yellow, while the ones in your tank are clearly not.

I'm not a mycologist so I can't offer expert advice on the topic, but I'd remove them to be on the safe side. However, the trouble with mushrooms is that what you see above ground is just the fruiting bodies. There's going to be a network of mycelium in the substrate that will happily sprout more mushrooms whenever conditions are favorable. A substrate change (or at least sterilization) may be in order.

I noticed Mr. Mordax, I saw some through the glass about 3 - 4 inches deep in the substrate. After poking around a bit I found more. I'll change the substrate after I move in about a week.
