Hey everyone,

As you may know, I have been on the hunt for the southern alligator lizard. I actually posted one of my hunts here with habitat pics and also images of various creatures I found: http://scorpionforum.darkbb.com/t6439-hunt-for-the-southern-alligator-lizard-part-1

Well, I went on a second hunt the other day and I am very happy to say that I have found my target animal Very Happy

Here he is:

Thanks, everyone!

Shanos: yeah, I am very fortunate to be able to have such a variety of wildlife in my "backyard." This alligator lizard is very calm and surprisingly tame. It doesn't mind being handled and I can already hand feed it. Frillies are cool, but too expensive for me Smile

I also managed to catch another alligator lizard recently. It's a baby one, but it already has a nice red color pattern on its back. I will post pics of that trip when I have time in the "Hikes and Hunts" section. They are very cool pets--great eaters and very active. Will post more pics soon. Thanks for looking!

Not stupid at all Smile That's actually something that's commonly said about them. In fact, when they move, it looks exactly like a snake slithering. They move side to side in a wavy line, which makes them very hard to catch because of their unpredictable movements in the grass. Their tails are often twice the size of their bodies too, so they can easily give the illusion as being snakes from a distance.

Beautiful lizard. I use to catch these guys all the time as a kid. I found the best way was
to make a snare from a stalk of wild wheat that always seemed to be growing near by. Just
strip the kernels from the narrow end and tie it into a slip noose. This would give you an extra
4 or 5 feet of reach. Most of the time, the lizards would just sit there as you slipped the noose
over their heads. Otherwise, they would scurry away before you could get a hand on them.
Even harder to catch were the fence swifts (blue bellies).

Laoticus: I just saw your post about lizard fishin'. It looks like the snare technique is quite
common. Not surprising, as it works so well.

Thanks GS and shebeen. Yup, the noosing method makes things pretty easy. It's funny how close you can get without the blue bellies running away. I don't think it's that common of a method though because I haven't heard mention of someone using it for a while. I only happened to come upon an old video of someone using it and so I decided to try it out myself. It worked wonders haha.
