New Anole

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to show off my new green anole who has not stopped entertaining me. He/she has been very active and attentive to everything I do. By the way, does anyone else here keep them?

i used to, but it was early on in my animal keeping life, and i didnt like them because i couldnt handle them. now i keep scorps and stuff i dont have the need to handle them.
i might get more at some point, but i have spent too much already and have no space lol!

Those are feeder lizards right?

Yeah, unfortunately they're the feeders of the lizard world. I love how cheap they are though because I think they're a good looking species and I plan on having a communal setup in the future.

Scorpio: Yeah, they're definitely hard to handle and probably shouldn't be handled. You're right though, I don't feel the need to handle them after keeping pets like scorpions and roaches lol

lol, send some to me! theres no such thing as feeder lizards/fish over here so they cost about £10 per anole! so like 4 times what it is for you, though i suppose they are actually running around in the wild in america.

Wow, no feeder fish either? I can get 10 goldfish for $1 here because they're considered feeder fish. I think it's pretty cruel to use anoles as feeders, but I appreciate their price
The anoles for sale here are only $6 haha. Yup, the green anoles are native to the US and there apparently is plenty of them in Florida and in those nearby states. Heck, people like me get made fun of because we actually buy them for $6 hahaha.

i have one of these guys as a pet and mine is also very active

It would be really neat to have a large communal setup of these guys with tons of exotic plants and a timed misting device. It does suck that they use these guys as feeders. I know a guy who used to use them to feed his Avicularia avicularia. I love the ones that are more of a browninsh than green!

If all is well, I hope to have a communal setup in a decently sized terrarium with climbing vines, branch pieces, and tropical plants And yes, it's a shame they're used as feeders because not only are they very active, curious, and alert lizards, they're good-looking as well. That's odd, you like the brown ones instead of the green lol. I think there's a species that is always brown (I'm not entirely sure on this), but the type of anole I have can change colors between green and brown

Awesome. what is the plant you have in there?

It is a Schefflera arboricola and is known for its hardiness, which makes it ideal for my tank

I had one that was normally green when I was in high school. It escaped once (ok, twice), and I found it hanging out on a potted palm tree I keep in my room. By the time I caught it, it had changed to a brown so dark it was almost black. I think it's their way of saying "SCREW YOU, HUMAN!! I was almost free!!"

wow, I don't think I've ever seen on as dark as you've stated. It must have been pissed! "Muahaha, I'm invisible! Wait, no...it's impossible! Argh, unhand me!...Curse you!!!"

These are cool we have just been looking at them in a local pet shop, i really want one...hang on maybe 4 lol they are selling for £10 though and they only had 1, i need 1 male and 3 females, are they relativly easy to keep? do you have to do much cleaning, and how much do they eat?

Have you got a pic of the whole setup? be intersested to see how you have done things, do you need quite deep peat to hold a live plant?

Oh crap, that's expensive compared to here! I still think they are worth it though! In my experience and opinion, they are very easy to keep. Honestly, I hardly ever interact with it. I just put in my B. lateralis roaches and make sure it has droplets of water to drink from (I have a home-made dripping system which I'll show). The only times I open the tank are to throw in roaches once every couple of days. I guess the cleaning depends on the owner. This lizard does poop every day, but they're very small. I've only gotten some of it that go on the plants and that's it. I have it in an exo-terra terrarium and use a 5.0 UVB jungle bulb (good for the live plants as well as the anole). If you look closely, some of the leaves in the above pic have been burned and that was due to the infrared heat lamp I used before for heat, but after taking it out and installing the 5.0 UVB, the plant has thrived. As for how deep you need the substrate, it depends on the plant and its root system. If you can fully cover the plant's roots in 3 inches of substrate, then that's fine. The schefflera plant I have in there right now is actually growing and it's only in 2 inches of substrate. I'm hoping to move the anole into a larger, communal setup once it grows a bit more and I get the right tank.

Thats awesome thanx for the info, think we will use our haddys exo terra tank and get her something different as that's perfect size taller than it is wide so crap for a scorpion really lol, will have to ask the guy at the pet store if he can get us a few

Sweet, let us know how that goes and if you ever get that communal setup going, post some pics!

I live in Florida and yes, there is a lot of Anoles here. Although I must say, I haven't seen one in a bit.
