there is a differnt in the stings that scorpions give.. Prey stings, dry stings.. its possible that Eddy got a dry sting or got a sting that really didnt have any venom in it..

This thread has been moved to the general forum as per the sting report guidelines:

Eddy probably won't reply for a while because he's busy with school. It would be interesting to know his thoughts when it happened.

Well if you keep poking it with a stick and getting it really really really angry and putting it in a corner.. the it will pump more venom in you iam sure, but if its just crawling around and you just accidently brush your hand aganst it, then it will just be a <bugger> off sting.. less venom.. dry stings, defensive stings and prey stings.. Very Happy

I guess a sting report by a supposedly incredibly deadly scorpion is going to get a lot of attention. Rolling Eyes

Another way to look at the sting:
LD50 of L. quinquistriatus = ~0.25 mg venom per kg body mass
Assume Eddy weighs around 200 lbs = 91 kg
Required venom for a 50% chance of kill = 23 mg

Next question: does anyone know the average volumetric mass of a scorpion's sting? Also useful would be the differences in volume between a warning defensive sting, a "get the hell out!" defensive sting, and one used to subdue prey.

and i take that you found that LD50 from mice? so it might even be bigger for humans..

Well, they typically don't perform LD50 studies on humans. Wink

And you know people would get irritated if it were tried on other primates.

Lq can inject less than 0,3mg of venom per sting. while A.australis up to 2mg.

Well, there we have it. If you only weigh two and a half pounds, you might stand a 50/50 chance of death.

Assuming a healthy immune system, etc.

it was made into a new thread because the envenom threads, like the breading ones are my forum rules to be kept clean without discussion afterwards, so any discussion you want from those forums to post in this forum with its own title

I'm about 250 give or take a few(probably give since I need to start working out again) and I now know I'm not allergic to the venom and I can safely say I'm not going to die from this sting. Now that I stated that, PLEASE DO NOT THINK YOU WOULD HAVE IT AS EASY AS I DID. I've been handling scorps since I was a little kid and some dangerous ones at that. I know different techniques to doing it and I know how do it without getting hurt. But this sting was because I underestimated a deathstalkers behavior and I was to focused on the one in my hand (the safest one since there was no way for it to sting me) and less focused on the ones in the tank. This was not a dry sting but I'm sure it wasn't a full injection one either. LQ was the worst sting I've had in terms of pain but my C. excilisculpt was the worst one in terms of time. It was very similar to an lq sting just slightly less intense but the effects stayed with me for weeks rather than just hours. My assumption would be... I got a VERY Small dose of venom with the LQ but it had every right to protect itself since I was practicly about to kill it with my hand. Where as the C. sculpt was still hanging on to me and I got a very LARGE dose of that venom. I think if I got the same dosage of venom with the LQ i probably would of been feeling the effects for a LONG time.

so, I'm lost. I'm gone from saturday morning to sunday evening and apparently I missed out on when and where this thread came from. did you post it Eddy? when did you get stung? I'm just now getting real coffee since saturday morning so my headache is slowly going away right now. I need to hook this stuff up intravenously in order to keep up.
