Cooler box (those styrofoam ones for transporting fish) + Heatpad/Flexwatt + Thermostat = DIY Incubator. If you need more details or pics, let me know. - Den wrote:

No problems at all. Just stick to the "no prey larger than the space between their eyes" rule. Mine get defrost rodents 1-4 times a month. Rat pups are what I recommend as they're soft and furless, but they do have more fat than i.e. young mice. Usually my male gets more as he's younger. I like giving them as a treat and also as a source for extra calcium (and extra fat for the younger one). The male usually gets 2-3 rat pups per feeding while the female gets one 10-15gr mouse (that's about the biggest I would feed an adult).

Pictures are not really that important mate .. i think i can work it out from your list of ingredients One thing though...I've read that temps for a incubator should lie around the 30-32 degrees mark but i can't seem to find any reliable info on humidity..Anything you can help me with? Also...is a winter hibernation period necessary in your opinion to induce mating, or can it be at any time?...I've found conflicting advice with regards to that aspect of their behaviour to.

| As far as I know, incubating humidity should be about 75-80%, never more than 85%. It's not that critical. As long as they don't mold (too much humidity) or dent (too dry), you should be fine.
I would advice to allow the BDs to brumate. It allows for the female to have a rest to gain strength for the breeding season, and will also trigger the natural "clock" for mating in both sexes.
Some reptiles don't need it at all (like Leopard geckos) and some won't mate without it (most colubrids). From the info I've been gathering for the past 1-2 years, BDs really should be allowed to brumate if you want to have a succesful breeding season.
I usually keep a 14hr light cycle during summer, and in november I gradually decrease it to 8hr. For a full brumation, you will need to gradually drop their temps too and cease feeding (they can't digest under 35 celsius).
