My new Desert Hairy Enclosure! Empty
PostSubject: My new Desert Hairy Enclosure!   My new Desert Hairy Enclosure! Empty3/2/2011, 11:02 pm

It is finally all dried up (I hope), took about a week with a heat pad on the bottom and a 50w IR light shining from up top.

I Have the heat pad on the side and I am still going to use the Ir light for a few more days just in case.

I dug a little tunnel leading into the pot and I put his old hide over it so he can go in and out, I thought it looked cool so I stuck with it, and the cactus is a real one, in a oversized shot glass (Ill take it out to water, no small pots around the house)

I used 2:1 ratio of sand and excavator sand (its rock hard!) hopefully he can still dig lol, and I put some white colored sand over the top of all of it just for kicks.

Here are some pics:

I made the pics smaller cause I noticed my phone takes 600x400 size and these are roughly half of that, let me know what you guys think.

yeah I like it, I got a tunnel leading into it from the bottom and the entrance to that tunnel is covered by his old hide.

I noticed some black spots on him in between his joints on his right claw Sad mycosis? i dont put water in his thing so he might have had it since I bought him a month ago :/

Yeah I wish I could lift his hide up to show the entrance but hes been doing some digging in there IE kicking up sand, so I would hate to ruin whatever hes done

Even if the sand is pretty hard/solid, he can still burrow right?

2:1 ratio should work fine. They are pro diggers.
If i remember correctly, i've read someone posted in the forum that his desert hairy is still to dig with the same ratio. Although it may seemed alittle hard to us.

Btw +1 to the white colored sand over the top Smile

Nice one mate, that's looking good, much better than the KK. He'll make a maze of tunnels in there for you, hopefully against the glass.

Yeah he'll still be able to burrow like mad, bet its not as hard as 100% ex clay. Give it a few days. I've also found trying not to over feed them can keep them coming out at night for food otherwise they can spend a scary amount of time hidden in their burrows.

Yeah I think he likes it, hes been exploring all day he even climbs up top of the pot (good thing for the lid lol). He avoids the cactus area for the most part lol and hes been kicking up the sand everywhere, havent seem him extend the already made burrow yet though.

Now I want to know whether or not hes an adult or not? Mine is the same size as JamieLawrence
DH, but I have seen some bigger/fatter ones, mines pretty skinny and I feed him twice a week an adult cricket, or should I be feeding more?

Yeah I dig the pot too, hence why I got it lol, hes filled the inside of the pot with the loose sand and covered the entrance to the rock hide I placed over the tunnel entrance I made for him, hes sitting in between the tunnel and the hide currently lol

He did all this while I was at work lol

That answers my question. I've been wondering if I could put a cactus in my desert hairy enclosure.

Ive been getting both yes and noes, but as long as you take it out to water/drain and then put it back in in a pot or a shot glass like I did it should be fine.

Ive only had it for a few days now, I just put the DH in there yesterday

But I guess watering/draining once a month should be enough

And as for the DH sticking itself and hurting itself on the cactus, mine just dug up the entire shot glass and made a mound next to it, so I am sure it will be fine lol.

@qqqqz sure you can but if you are using crickets as feeders and leave them in for any length of time they will eat the cactus!

That's fine. A cactus is cheap. A cricket has to eat to survive. The scorpion won't eat a dead cricket.

But as that other guy said, the crickets are gone within five minutes anyway. Mine does the same.

Scorpions do eat dead crickets as long as its within a few hours

One of my crickets died from the trip from the store to my house (like 10 mins). So I tossed it in with the scorpion and within a few hours it was gone lol.

I smash the heads of small crickets and hand feed them to my baby emp since hes spoiled too lol.

Scorpions in general may eat them while dead. MINE never touches them.
