Cricket feed/dust Empty
PostSubject: Cricket feed/dust   Cricket feed/dust Empty3/4/2011, 8:57 pm

I noticed that pet stores sell certain material to feed/dust the prey your scorpion would be eating. My local pet store sells crickets 20 for a dollar so I always find my self being a cricket owner for a while, and I was thinking might as well give them one last meal or dusting lol.

Anyone know anything about this?

Hi, feeding your cricket's food will keep them alive and healthier for longer aswell as they will be gut-loaded to give the best nutrition onto your scorps.

When you dust crickets it's to add a supplement for the thing your feeding for example Bearded Dragons need calcium dust on their cricket's but there's no supplement a scorpion needs except healthy prey so dusting would probably be pointless.

We always cut up a grape or tomato in half and stick it in the tub and it's gone in a few hours, much better than dust, they also get a got amount of fluids from somethingblike a grape or tomato Smile

I usually just use the dry roach chow I had picked up for my roaches, probably a crushed blend of bran cereals and pellets used to feed birds or turtles or what not. I was looking at chicken feed but only got a bucket of the stuff for egg laying chickens which contains things to make the shells stronger (not good for feeder roaches). I need to look at the stuff for birds that are being raised for meat.

Dusting I have read would not be good for feeders for Scorpions (not sure about T's). Calcium is supposed to be bad for them. That is why the substrate with added calcium (for reptiles) should be avoided too.

I have also done what you have Bex, but what a freakin' mess! Very Happy

Might have to do some research on dry food blends now Very Happy Thanks for the motivation and of course if I am still motivated later on when I do I'll share my findings.

Thanks! I'll probably use turtle food since I have tons of that stuff.

Also do you think its worth it to start breeding my own crickets. I could get about 100 for something like 2.50. If so what are the requirements for having a cricket breeding enclosure.

+1 on Bex and thanks Bex Very Happy

I opted for roaches over crickets for a multitude of reasons. They are easier to breed, the are odorless, the nymphs mature faster and the roaches will live a lot longer! They are also healthier as prey items - mucho protein if you know what I'm sayin Very Happy
