PostSubject: puzzled. any help?   1/25/2011, 8:26 am

Hey guys. New to the site. I been lurking around here for awhile and finally joined. I got a question that maybe someone can answer hopefully. I have a few species I been keeping and know that scorpions can do some odd things sometimes. Well my 5th instar Androctonus Mauritanicus has got really fat. So I have been expecting another molt soon. Well she has done something so wouldn't expect out of the species. She has burrowed herself and closed off the burrow. I thought she magically escaped but upon further investigation I can see her in the substrate against the glass hiding in a chamber she has made. Now the temp stays around eighty three and drops slightly at night in her tank. Perhaps maybe she is seeking somewhere slightly more humid for her molt to sixth instar? Even though the substrate she is on is completely dry. However I do offer her a small bottle cap for water if she ever needed it. Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Has she ever molted in your care?

If not, I would hesitate a guess that she's getting ready to give birth.

If she has molted in your care, then you're probably correct in guessing that she's finding somewhere suitable to molt -- probably more due to shelter from predators than looking for humidity, I'd guess.

would it be a good idea to put a little bit of water in in case she needs slightly higher humidity?

Hey guys. Thanks for the input. Yes she has molted within my care. I got her at 4th instar and she molted fine under some cork bark. Now I do have her in a small enclosure because she is small but now since she is getting bigger maybe her hide is too small for her. I am in the process of preparing her a larger tank. But all research I have done on this species says that that don't need much moisture but I know during a molt that raising the humidity slightly can help but she molted fine during her last molt under the same conditions. I really don't think she is gravid but I could always be wrong. I hope not. Lol. Last thing I need right now is more babies. My three H. Trillineatus has gave birth. They are almost ready to molt to third instar. Smile this is a really great forum. This is the only forum I have ever joined. Thank you guys again.

In that case, don't change the conditions. She's probably getting ready to molt.

I agree with the peeps above. Most prob a molt is coming up since you mentioned it's only at 5th instar now.
Androctonus Mauritanicus is one of my favorite as well. If possible, post up some pics after it has molted.
The tail is going to get Big & Fat *slurp

I will post some pics up soon as she molts but this is really starting to worry me though. She is still burrowed. Starting to think I should dig her out in case there is a problem she may not be able to gel out. I know she can dig herself out but she has been in for some days now. Sorry to seem like a bother. It has me freaked out. I don't want anything bad. To happen her. Or it could be everything is all right. Just never had a scorp quite do this like this before. Thanks guys. I will keep ya updated.

Sometimes scorpions disappear and / or fast for months at a time. Just pretend you don't own a scorpion for a week or so.

UPDATE: Ok guys. Well a few weeks ago I went ahead and dug her up and she was fine. She went back to burying herself again so I just left her alone. Thinking when she gets ready she would come out. So today I checked her and behold!! She finally popped out her burrow. She did molt! Smile She is now a healthy 6th instar. Fed her a cricket and she took it viciously. Just never seen a scorp molt like she has. Maybe as this species grows. Molting is very strenuous effort on them and it takes more time with each molt? As soon as I can get a good pic of her I will post a pic. She has retreated back to her burrow. Oh BTW, my two tityus stigmurus has molted too!!!

Try not to worry so much when a scorp burrows for a while they will eventually come out be by digging them up you can stress them out and the molt can come out unsucessful. Congrats btw.
