| Heterometrus spp. do it by rubbing their chelicerae on a special rough patch on the first segment of the pedipalps. That's why you may notice them twitch their mouthparts and raise their "arms" when you hear it.
Parabuthus spp. that are capable do so by rubbing the telson on their tergites.
What's scary is watching something like a T. blondi hiss at you while rearing up with its fangs out (yes, Ts can stridulate too). | |
